Key Contacts and Resources
Disclaimer: As we continue through COVID-19, we will refer to the local, provincial and national government guidelines and protocols. As the government guidelines continue to change and evolve, Havergal’s policies and practices will also continue to evolve and adjust. We will endeavor to provide notice where possible. However, where circumstances limit that option, policies may be subject to change without notice.

We are delighted to be able to welcome students back on campus in the Fall Term. As Toronto emerges safely from the pandemic, we are contributors to the greater aim to return to more normal interactions. Havergal is going to look a little different in September. School will not be like it was before COVID-19, but we are patiently making progress towards that goal. The safe return to campus rests in all of our hands. We need everyone’s unwavering commitment to the guidelines and procedures that will help us to keep the campus open. It is very important that families read the content in this Handbook and discuss it with their children. Please emphasize the expectations and key behaviours to your children, which ensure that together we can continue to move towards the fullest experience of Havergal’s incredible programs and resources. I look forward to welcoming our community back to the campus and thank you in advance for your continued support and cooperation. This Handbook summarizes our preparations and plans.
Sincerely,
Catherine Misson Principal

“Note that a risk reduction strategy is different from a goal of achieving zero cases. There is no such thing as ‘zero risk’, in anything we do, and certainly not during a pandemic.” -Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health
● This Handbook outlines the College’s plan for a safe return to campus. ● Our aim is risk minimization of COVID-19 infection and spread, for students and employees. ● No student should attend campus if they have one or more of the following symptoms: fever (temperature of 37.8°C or greater), cough, shortness of breath, decrease or loss of taste or smell, sore throat, stuffy and/or runny nose, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, lethargy, muscle aches and/or malaise. ● Havergal screening and COVID testing recommendations mirror the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education and Toronto Public Health guidelines. These can be found in the screening section of this Handbook. ● Physical distancing, hand hygiene, face masks and good respiratory etiquette should be observed by all. ○ JK to Grade 12: Students are required to wear a face mask at school. ● The College’s plan takes into account the requirements of both the Ontario Ministry of Health , Ontario Ministry of Education and Toronto Public Health and it is responsive to ongoing advice from other health agencies. ● Any COVID-19 related information or action plans will be addressed by the following: It is important for students and their families to understand that no interpersonal activity is without risk of transmission of infection at any time. The risk of spread in schools is related to the prevalence of infection in the community context in which Havergal is situated. One of the key challenges for schools during this pandemic is balancing the need for a practical and sensible level of caution with the need to provide an environment for students that supports their academic and overall wellbeing. The most critical part of managing the risks of COVID-19 as it relates to schools is avoiding the introduction of COVID-19 into the school. If the infection is not introduced, then it cannot spread. procedures in school settings are always important, but even more so in a pandemic situation. A heightened awareness by our employees, students and families is required so that our community understands how to protect itself, while remaining connected and active. The Ontario Ministry of Education issued guidelines for the reopening of schools in September; our Return to Campus (RTC) Handbook reflects these guidelines.

The College’s preparations and procedures take into account the requirements of both the Ontario Ministry of Health and Ontario Ministry of Education, and are responsive to ongoing advice from Toronto Public Health.
Our goals:
Minimize the risk of COVID-19 infections and spread through appropriate mitigation strategies and protocols.
Support our students in their return to campus experience so that they maintain their physical, social and cognitive wellbeing.
Enable students to return to the physical campus every day.
Provide academic and wellbeing programming for both on campus and remote students.

Role of Parents/Guardians
Return to Campus Agreement - Updated February 2021 In preparation for your child’s return to Campus on February 16, 2021, all families are required to recommit to the Return to Campus Agreement. The Return to Campus Agreement dictates that parents/guardians must review, agree and share with their children, the measures outlined in the Return to Campus Parent and Student Handbook and the Annual Havergal College Screening Agreement. The link to the Return to Campus Agreement will be sent with the daily screening on February 10 and 11, 2021. Daily screening questions may change throughout the school year to mirror Toronto Public Health and Ministry of Education guidelines; families will be updated as these changes occur. Day Students Parents/guardians will be required to complete daily online screening for all on campus learners prior their arrival on campus each day. Students are not permitted to enter the campus until the daily screening is complete and has been verified upon entry. Boarding Students Boarding student daily screening will be completed by the Dons prior to the start of their school day. Daily Havergal College Screening
7
Additional Health and Hygiene Protocols In addition parents/guardians must adhere to the health and hygiene protocols laid out below: ● Notify the College of the reason for any student absences. ● Complete the daily online screening, even if the student is staying home for the day due to illness. ● After completing the screening tool, parents will automatically be sent an email with the Havergal College COVID-19 Screening and Return to School Protocol. ● Havergal screening and COVID-19 testing recommendations mirror the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education and Toronto Public Health guidelines. ○ If a COVID-19 related symptom or concern is identified during the screening process, a nurse from the Health Centre will call the family to follow-up and provide advice regarding testing and return to school.
Continuous Learning Program
● We are committed to continuous learning and have provisions in place should the College be required to close the campus.
Masks
● JK to Grade 12: Students are required to wear a well fitting (covers nose and chin, does not gape at the side) face mask at school. ● Students in Grades 4 to 12 are required to wear a medical (non-cloth) mask indoors during the school day. ● Students in JK to Grade 3 may wear a medical or cloth mask. It is key that their masks fit well and have three layers. ● A three-layered mask is recommended by the Public Health Agency of Canada to improve protection from COVID-19. ● Masks are required to be worn by students at all times, both inside and outdoors. ● There are only two exemptions to mask wearing: ○ When students are eating. They must be distanced to remove their mask and when they are done eating the
mask needs to be put back on promptly. ○ When directed by a Phys. Ed. teacher.
8
● We request that parents wear masks and maintain distance during drop-off/pick-up. Your cooperation sets a good example for our students and further curbs the possibility of the spread of COVID-19 or other viruses. ● Information about use and care of masks can be found at Toronto Public Health .
Handwashing
● Hand sanitizing is required upon entry to the College, entry and exit of each classroom, entry and exit of washrooms and before and after eating. ● Students are expected to wash their hands with soap and water after using the washroom. ● Signage with hygiene instructions and reminders have been placed throughout the campus to promote good hygiene practices and routines.
Physical Distancing
● Physical distancing is encouraged for all areas of the campus, where possible. Student desks will be spaced accordingly in classrooms to encourage distancing. ● Classrooms have been arranged to achieve physical distancing between students. ● Classes and other activities will take place outdoors where possible.
Cleaning
● Cleaning supplies approved by the Public Health Agency of Canada are available in every classroom across the College. ● Hand sanitizing units with an approved solution by the Public Health Agency of Canada have been installed throughout the school. ● All washrooms and high-touch areas will be cleaned twice a day and bins emptied frequently. ● Additionally, all surface cleaning will be completed every night. ● Air conditioning filters have been upgraded to MERV13.
9
● New bipolar ionization technology to proactively purify indoor air has been installed in areas with forced air systems. This technology disinfects the air and all surfaces by neutralizing particulate matter, bacteria and viruses, odorous gases and aerosols. ● Classrooms that do not have forced air systems have been fitted with air purification devices with HEPA filters and UV-C light, neutralizing bacteria and viruses. ● All classroom lights will be turned on by Security in the morning to minimize the use of high-touch areas. ● Adjustments to our facilities to eliminate high-touch surfaces include installation of sensor technology in washrooms and water bottle filling stations. ● The Health Centre has protocols in place, such as disinfecting isolation rooms, between patients. ● Students need to clean electronics and laptops upon arrival at school every day. After arriving at school in the morning, each student should use a 70 percent isopropyl alcohol wipe, Clorox Disinfecting Wipe, or disinfectant spray on a paper towel (provided in each classroom), gently cleaning the hard, non-porous surfaces of the phone or laptop such as the display, keyboard or other exterior surfaces. ● When indoors, every student must eat lunch at their assigned classroom, form or cohort advisory desk. ● Students may only remove their masks while eating and must replace their masks as soon as they are done. ● Student desks are arranged to maximize physical distancing during lunch time. ● When outdoors, students must eat lunch at the assigned grade, form and cohort advisory space. Students must maintain six feet of physical distance between themselves and their peers. ● Students who are unable to follow these instructions independently and without reminders will be asked to learn from home until they can adhere to these requirements.
Lunch Time

Washrooms
● Students must read and adhere to the signage and guidelines posted outside washrooms at all times. ● The signage outlines how many people are permitted in each washroom at one time. ● Students must sanitise their hands before entering the washroom and wash their hands with soap and water before leaving. ● No eating or drinking is permitted in washrooms. ● No more than one student may be in a stall at one time. ● Electronic devices are not permitted to be used in washrooms. ● If students are not able to independently follow these protocols without reminders, they will be asked to learn from home until they can adhere to the protocols. Every student is expected to comply with the following to help ensure everyone’s safety: ● No student should attend campus if they have one or more of the following symptoms: fever (temperature of 37.8°C or greater), cough, shortness of breath, decrease or loss of taste or smell, sore throat, stuffy and/or runny nose, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, lethargy, muscle aches and/or malaise. ● Tell your teacher immediately upon feeling unwell or experiencing any of the above symptoms. ● Refrain from hugging and handshaking; there are other ways to say “hi” and express your friendship and care for others. ● No sharing of food or drinks. ● Remain at arms-length distance from each other and from employees. ● Do not rearrange any desks or furniture. ● Follow directions for the use of common areas, washrooms and classrooms. ● Cough and sneeze into your elbow or a tissue and dispose of tissues immediately. ● Wash or sanitize your hands after coughing, sneezing, entering/leaving classrooms and washrooms and before/after eating. ● Lockers will not be used until further notice. You must carry your daily belongings with you in a bag or backpack, including food and a labelled water bottle. Student and Family Responsibilities
11
If a student repeatedly breaches these directions despite reminders or feedback, they will be removed from the class and their parent/guardian will be contacted by the appropriate Head of School to discuss next steps. If necessary, the parent/guardian will be asked to pick-up the student immediately and they will not be allowed to return to campus until their behaviour is manageable.
We encourage students to return to campus for learning, community connections and overall wellbeing:
● Parent meetings will be conducted via Zoom or telephone. ● No excursions or overnight camps will continue until further notice.
Remote Learning
● If a student or a member of the student's household is at a greater risk of a more serious illness, if they are infected with COVID-19 or if there are other reasons why they are unable to return to school, we strongly encourage you to contact your child’s Head of School to discuss this matter further. ● For students with visa issues or other significant reasons whereby they are unable to attend school for a long period of time, they will become remote learning students. Remote learning students will have online access to the Academic Program. ● Parents who have determined with their Head of School that their child will be attending school remotely, must complete the Remote Learning Registration form. ○ Remote Student Registration Form ● Remote learning students are able to return to school after school breaks, for example after Thanksgiving, November long weekend, December break, Family Day weekend or March Break.. An email will be sent out in advance of each school break with a form for families to notify the school if their child is returning to on-campus learning. ● Students who cannot be on campus due to illness, or those who have been instructed by Toronto Public Health to quarantine, will be able to access their class instructions online. Parents need to inform either the Junior School Office or Day School Office in those situations when their child will be absent for an extended period of time. All other student absences must be advised immediately to the Junior School Office at ○ JS remote learning manual ○ US remote learning manual

Investing in enhanced digital platforms and resources is a priority and key component of our Strategic Direction, Havergal 2020+: Future-Proofing the Next Generation . In the short term, we have partnered with Nelson Canada for Grades 7 to 10 to thoughtfully integrate Edwin , a multi-modal, interactive learning content platform that will enhance how students interact, curate and learn online. Students will experience a richer selection of resources hosted within their course pages, extending the capacity of our teachers to provide targeted learning experiences supported by high-quality, online content. Our mid to long-term objective is to provide teachers and students with a cutting-edge Learning Management System (LMS). We will begin implementing the new LMS in the 2022-23 academic year. We chose this product for its wealth of functionality, the company's approach to partnership with Havergal and because they are a globally-recognized specialist in school LMS design. We are currently in the development and testing stage of the project, to ensure that the LMS is best adapted to meet the needs of the College. Our extended timeline ensures an effective implementation. We will share updates with our community as we prepare to launch this exciting product that will include how we will provide the training and support available for students, faculty and families. The LMS will also be mobile-friendly to allow remote access from any device.

Wherever possible, students are asked to maintain safe distance from anyone else on campus. ● Desks will be spaced in rooms and students are asked to leave them in place. ● Large gatherings will be held by Zoom. ● Students are reminded of the importance of maintaining physical distance with employees. How do students sign in and out if they have an appointment? ● Parents/guardians should aim to schedule appointments at the beginning or end of the school day, as exiting and re-entering campus is not permitted during the day. ● Parents must notify the Day School Office about what time their child will be arriving or leaving campus. Students must go directly to their Form/cohort/class when they arrive and sign in with their teacher. It is essential that the College have accurate records of who is on campus at all times. ● Parents/guardians will need to pick up students at the front of the school, since they are not permitted to enter the building.
