History “In the spring of 1894, a school for girls at 350 Jarvis Street was about to close its doors, and a group of men led by The Honourable H. Blake formed an organization for taking over the building and making it the home of what became Havergal College. The group of men who founded Havergal College had great faith in the future of Canada and wanted to provide a sound academic education for their daughters. Being members and strong followers of the Anglican Church of Canada, they established the continuing policy of having its beliefs and teachings in their school. Miss Ellen Mary Knox was the First Principal of the school. She was a graduate of Oxford University, a teacher at Cheltenham Ladies College in England and a devout member of the Church. The school cared about the education of women long before most women began to take themselves seriously.” – Catherine Steele 1928, M.A., D.Litt. D.S. Litt. Havergal College was named for Frances Ridley Havergal, an outstanding woman of the early Victorian era. A composer, author and humanitarian, her hymns were used by the Church of England and by non-conformist religions. These hymns have survived repeated hymnbook revisions and continue to appear in Anglican, United Church and Presbyterian hymnals. Ellen Knox, who led the school with vision through its first 30 years (1894 to 1924), often posed the question to her students: “What are you going to do?” This principle still lives in Havergal’s mission statement. For more than a century, Old Girls have answered that challenge to make a difference by leading and contributing to their professions, to their communities and to the world.

Educational Philosophy An independent Day and Boarding School dedicated to the education of young women, Havergal College addresses educational needs by creating a learning environment that encourages girls to respond with vigour and imagination to their world. Havergal Symbols The school’s symbols include the Havergal crest, comprised of maple leaves, laurel branches, a torch and a lamp of learning, which symbolizes the school motto of “passing on the torch of life” (Vitai Lampada Tradens). The marguerite daisy was chosen as the school flower “because it grew so cheerily wherever its luck found it, and because it looked up so steadily at the light that its heart was pierced with purest gold, its petals the purest white.” – Havergal College’s First Principal, Ellen Knox (1894-1934) Havergal Traditions Havergal has many traditions that have stood the test of time including: Prayers, Founders’ Day, Celebration Weekend, Carol Service, the House System, Candlelight Ceremony, Grandchildrens’ Party and many more. The school fosters strong ties within its community of students, Old Girls (graduates), parents, faculty and staff. Old Girls cherish the lifelong friendships and support network they developed at the school and serve as inspirational role models for Havergal students. Since 1895, more than 9,500 alumnae have graduated from the school.

House System The House system forms the basis for cross-grade community building within the school. It fosters peer-to-peer mentoring and leadership development, as the program is primarily student-led. There are 10 Houses, each of which are named in honour of women who have contributed to the well-being of Havergal in different but meaningful ways. Some have been principals of the school, some have been much-loved staff members and others have influenced the growth of the school. Havergal’s House system is an integral part of the school’s organization, with every student (Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12), Old Girl, staff and faculty member belonging to one of the 10 Houses. Siblings and daughters of alumnae join the Houses of their relatives. Each girl’s efforts and achievements in House spirit competitions, athletics, the arts and co-curricular activities credit her House toward winning the coveted House Banner for the year. Prayers is rooted in Havergal’s rich Anglican tradition. Faculty, staff and students gather for Prayers three times per week in the Junior and Upper School respectively. Prayers creates a shared space for the Chaplain, students, faculty, staff, Old Girls and invited guests—not only to articulate the school’s spiritual values, but also to make meaningful connections between the kinds of thinking and learning we do in relation to our community and, more broadly, the world. Prayers prompts questions, deepens insights and celebrates our community in all its diversity. Students are invited to reflect on the resonance of the school’s vision, mission and values and how they apply to their own lives. Major religious festivals of other faiths are also acknowledged at Prayers. Attendance at Prayers is compulsory because it is considered instructional time and, as such, is an academic requirement. Parents are always welcome to attend Prayers. Prayers
Religious Education
At Havergal, the development of spiritual and moral values is an essential part of character development. All students from JK to Grade 8 participate in religious education classes. While our traditions are Anglican, major religious festivals of other faiths are celebrated and shared.

Philanthropy Beginning with its founding in 1894, Havergal’s long tradition of philanthropic support has spanned generations. The establishment of its present Avenue Road campus in 1926, the addition of new wings built in 1959, 1977 and 1999 as well as Havergal’s Athletic Centre and Dr. Catherine Steele Archives, both of which opened in 2006, were all made possible through contributions from members of the Havergal community. Today, this tradition continues with generous community support of our Limitless Campaign, which will help to fund a much needed expansion of both the Junior and Upper Schools. Why Is Donating Important? Annual giving is an important source of financial support for curriculum enrichment, financial assistance, special projects and many other initiatives that make our academic, athletics, visual and performing arts programs unique. Each year, we invite members of the Havergal community, including parents, Old Girls, Grade 12 students, staff and friends to donate to our Annual Fund. Everyone who is a member of the Havergal community is invited to support to the best of their ability. Each generation of Havergal students has benefited from the generosity of past supporters. By making an annual gift, donors are advancing our culture of giving and ensuring that our girls have an enriching experience while at Havergal. Participation is as important as the amount given ; a sense of community is strengthened when everyone gives and feels invested in the school’s mission. The Annual Giving program is administered by staff in the department of Advancement & Community Relations. Annual giving packages are mailed each fall. A reminder mailing is delivered in the spring to those who have not already made a donation. We aim to have 100% participation from parents. Did You Know? ● Tuition covers approximately 90% of the actual cost of a Havergal education. ● All gifts of $25 or more receive a charitable tax receipt. ● Havergal’s fiscal year is from July 1 to June 30. ● All Havergal donors are recognized in our Annual Report.

What Are the Priority Areas? Where supporters direct their gifts is up to them. Some direct their donations toward specific areas, while others choose the area of greatest need. This year, Havergal’s area of greatest need is the Limitless Campaign. Limitless Campaign Havergal’s current fundraising initiative, the Limitless Campaign , is the school’s most ambitious fundraising endeavor to date and brings to life our strategic vision of delivering leading programs in spaces that inspire learning, with a focus on art, STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) music, health and well-being and environmental sustainability. Our goal is to raise $21 million to support developments to Havergal’s Junior and Upper Schools and we have raised nearly $14 million to date. With construction underway, Havergal is aiming to complete these enhancements to both the Junior and Upper Schools during the 2019-20 school year. The Junior School will undergo a two-storey addition to the north of the existing building, where new customized classrooms dedicated to Art, Music and STEM programs will bolster interdisciplinary opportunities. Reconstructed Junior and Senior Kindergarten classrooms, a renovated gymnasium and a new dining wing will also significantly change the look and feel of the Junior School. Our Upper School will experience a three-storey addition at the rear of the building adjoining the Athletic Centre, providing redesigned Art studios, innovative technology classrooms, a learning commons (featuring a three-storey BioWall) a newly designed quad and a renovated servery.

Governance and School Leadership
Governance The Board of Governors is responsible for the overall stewardship of Havergal College, setting broad policy directions through strategic planning and goal setting and ensuring the financial stability of the school. The Board is responsible for appointing the Principal, to whom it delegates authority over the administration of the school including matters of curriculum and staffing. In keeping with membership requirements of the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS), the Board oversees the school and remains at arm’s length from the administration. Senior Leadership Team (SLT) Members of the Senior Leadership Team assume strategic and operational oversight for different aspects of the school. The SLT is chaired by the Principal and made up of individuals with responsibilities for Academics, Admission, Advancement, Community Relations, Communications, Marketing, Excursions, Exchanges, Facilities, Finance, School Life, School Operations, Safety, Student Wellness, Human Resources and Information Technology. Principal The Principal provides strategic oversight and leadership to all aspects of Havergal College while fostering the school’s enduring values: Integrity, Inquiry, Compassion and Courage. As well, the Principal oversees fiscal and human resources management, fundraising and advancement initiatives, the development of faculty and staff, short- and long-term facilities planning, local and global outreach and building relationships within and beyond the Havergal community. The Principal ensures that Havergal’s vision, mission and values guide and support the school’s strategic and operational initiatives and welcomes the opportunity to meet with individual parents to discuss various school-related topics. The Principal holds faculty and staff accountable for all aspects of their professional conduct. The Chief Financial Officer is responsible for the daily financial operations of the school, while driving Havergal’s long-term strategy for fiscal sustainability. The CFO acts as the Treasurer of the Board of Governors and of The Havergal College Foundation. Additionally, the CFO will be the staff liaison to the Chair of the Financial Sustainability Committee and oversee the financial management of the school’s Master Plan. This role extends to the areas of Food Services, Information Technology and the Business Office to ensure the smooth delivery of those functions. Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
Head, Junior School (JK–6)
The Head, Junior School is responsible for the leadership and strategic oversight of the Junior School students, faculty, staff and operations. The Head, Junior School ensures that effective strategies, resources and personnel are in place to meet the academic, social, emotional, health and wellness needs for Junior School students. The Head, Junior School assists other school leaders in dealing with serious student discipline and faculty / staff accountability related issues.
Vice Principal (VP) Teaching & Learning
The VP Teaching & Learning provides leadership and strategic oversight for academic programming and Ministry compliance from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12. Learning Support Specialists, Junior School Curriculum Coordinators and Upper School Department Heads work closely with the VP Teaching & Learning to align the teaching, learning and assessment vision of the school. The VP Teaching & Learning oversees the professional development of all faculty. The VP consults with faculty and other school leaders in dealing with serious student discipline and faculty / staff accountability related issues.

Vice Principal (VP) Student Engagement & Experiential Development The VP Student Engagement & Experiential Development provides leadership and strategic oversight for student engagement, experiential learning opportunities and student leadership programming residing both within and outside the school. This includes working to explore and implement experiential learning opportunities that align with Havergal’s strategic plan. The VP Student Engagement and Experiential Development provides leadership and strategic oversight for the Forum for Change and its Global Experience Programming, the school’s work on diversity, equity and identity, and social innovation programming. The VP consults with faculty, staff and other school leaders in dealing with serious student discipline issues and faculty / staff accountability related issues. Vice Principal (VP) School Life & Student Wellness The VP School Life & Student Wellness provides leadership and strategic oversight for the day-to-day operations of the Upper School (Grades 7 to 12), which includes the Boarding School (Grades 9 to 12). The VP School Life & Student Wellness also works collaboratively with the School Nurse, Social Worker, Guidance Department, Head of Junior School, Head of Middle School and Head of Boarding School, and Head of Senior School to ensure that students’ social, emotional, health and wellness needs are addressed from JK to Grade 12. Havergal’s approach to supporting the wellness needs of students is to establish a circle of care that places the student at the centre. The VP School Life & Student Wellness also consults with faculty, staff and other school leaders in dealing with serious student discipline and faculty / staff accountability related issues. Executive Director (ED) of People & Culture The Executive Director of People & Culture provides leadership and strategic oversight in the development and implementation of contemporary human resource frameworks that continue to attract and retain a highly engaged, committed and professional workforce. As well, the ED of People & Culture is responsible for consulting with senior leaders to align and implement human resources policies and programs that support Havergal’s philosophy, objectives and strategic plan, as well as providing HR support to all employees.

Executive Director (ED) of Advancement & Community Relations
The Executive Director of Advancement & Community Relations oversees the portfolios of major gifts, annual giving, special events, alumnae relations and prospect research. As an ambassador for Havergal and the broader community, the ED of Advancement & Community Relations provides guidance to the Havergal College Parent Association (HCPA). This ED spearheads the securing of financial support from potential donors committed to the vision of the school and leads strategies to engage alumnae, parents and others in school life as volunteers, advocates and supporters. Executive Director (ED) of Strategic Enrolment Management The ED Strategic Enrolment Management is responsible for the oversight of all processes that connect students and their families to the Havergal educational experience and is responsible for the successful enrolment outcome for the school. A focus of the ED Strategic Enrolment Management is the tracking of student development and growth from applicant to graduate, with a focus on understanding specific cohorts and developing avenues for parents to become engaged in and educated about their daughter’s experience as they progress through the school. The ED Strategic Enrolment Management is the staff liaison with the Planning and Priorities Committee of the Board of Governors. Executive Director (ED) of Communications & Marketing The Executive Director of Communications & Marketing provides leadership and strategic oversight of Havergal’s marketing and communications programs and activities. The ED of Communications & Marketing works collaboratively with faculty and staff to increase Havergal’s brand recognition and promote the school through various storytelling efforts. As a brand ambassador for Havergal, the ED of Communications & Marketing ensures consistent messaging across the school’s online, social media and print material and manages public relations, media inquires, digital media, graphic design and Havergal’s Crisis Communications Plan. Director of Facilities The Director of Facilities provides leadership throughout the school in setting the direction for the design, plans, construction and maintenance of Havergal’s building, grounds, equipment, security, construction and other facilities to achieve optimal utilization. In addition, the Director of Facilities ensures compliance with the regulations and integrity of the historical status of the main building. The Director of Facilities is also the staff liaison to the Campus Management and Resource Development Committee.

Director of Information Technology (IT) The Director of IT is responsible for providing vision and leadership in developing and implementing the school’s information technology strategy to support ongoing operations, strategic plan and mission. Working collaboratively with academic and administrative staff, the Director of IT ensures the school’s network infrastructure and system servers and application suite provides a safe and reliable platform by which the school can serve all members of its community. The Director of IT ensures that the school’s technology initiatives enhances teaching and learning. Executive Assistant (EA) to the Principal and Board of Governors Executive Assistant to the Principal and Board of Governors is responsible for all administrative functions and support relating to the Office of the Principal, the Board of Governors and the Governance Committee of the Board. As an Officer of the Corporation, the EA serves as Corporate Secretary, advising on Board processes, procedures, record-keeping and regulatory filings.

Junior School (JK-Grade 6)
Administration, Faculty and Staff
Assistant Head, Junior School The Assistant Head, Junior School supports the Head, Junior School in developing students’ awareness of themselves as learners and members of the broader Havergal community. The Assistant Head is accountable for the smooth functioning of day-to-day Junior School operations and for ensuring that students flourish at this stage of their education. Homeroom Teachers Students in JK to Grade 6 are organized into homerooms and have a teacher who oversees both the academic and social emotional learning of each student. Specialist Teachers Students are taught by specialist teachers in the areas of Visual Arts, Music, French, Technology and Health and Physical Education. These teachers are subject matter experts in their respective disciplines. Curriculum Coordinators The Curriculum Coordinators are teaching and learning specialists in their respective disciplines (Literacy, Mathematics, STEM and Program Integration) and work closely with the homeroom teachers in planning and co-teaching. Each Coordinator provides professional development opportunities for teachers and helps develop program resources to ensure the breadth, depth and consistency of our program areas. Learning Support Specialists Learning Support Specialists collaborate with teachers to support the academic, social and emotional learning needs of Junior School students. In addition, this team works with students who have identified learning needs and their teachers to establish and implement teaching, learning and / or assessment accommodations required for student success.

Learning Support Worker The Learning Support Worker (LSW) supports the social, emotional and behavioural development of all students. The LSW provides strategies and support for students with social-emotional needs both inside and outside the classroom. The LSW works collaboratively with the Learning Support Specialists to develop and implement Support Plans when necessary. Chaplains Havergal’s roots are steeped in the Anglican tradition and the school is fortunate to have two ordained Anglican priests working at the school to meet the pastoral and spiritual needs of the Havergal community. While our school traditions have an Anglican focus, major religious festivals of other faiths are celebrated and honoured at Prayers.
Athletic Director (AD)
The Junior School Athletic Director oversees the co-curricular athletic program from Grade 1 to 6. This includes all Squads, Squad teams and competitive teams. The JS AD also ensures that these programs provide a continuum of development that is age and stage appropriate.
Director of Performing Arts The Director of Performing Arts provides leadership and oversight to the JK-Grade 12 co-curricular program in the discrete domains of music, drama and dance, while also amplifying student potential in the performing arts. Director of the Forum for Change The Director of the Forum for Change, working closely with the Assistant Head of the Junior School, provides leadership and oversight of the JK-Grade 12 co-curricular program in the areas of social innovation, social justice work, community involvement and community partnerships.
Director of Risk Management The Director of Risk Management works with faculty and staff, and external vendors, to oversee the identification, assessment, and mitigation of risk for all school activities and excursions.

Local Health Integration Network Service (LHNS) Providers As part of our agreement with the Local Health Integration Network (LHIN), Havergal offers consultative support from designated service providers such as an Occupational Therapist (OT) and Speech Language Pathologist (SLP), who provides services at the school one day a week. The OT provides specific consultation in the areas of fine and gross motor skills, sensory processing, self care, executive functioning and visual spatial concerns. The SLP provides consultation and therapy around speech articulation problems. These services require a formalized recommendation from a Havergal College Learning Support Specialist to LHIN, who then considers whether or not services will be supported. If LHIN approves the services, those services will be provided at the school, at no charge to parents, for a limited number of sessions. School / LHIN Responsibilities: ● In-school services are subject to LHIN approval. This process can take as long as six to eight weeks. ● Appointments are booked by the Learning Support Specialists and are offered during the school day. Parent / Student Responsibilities: ● An appointment may be cancelled in advance by contacting the service provider and appropriate Learning Support Specialist for a particular grade. ● If a student misses an appointment without first contacting the therapist and Learning Support Specialist, it will count as an authorized session. ● Students may not miss an in-class assessment scheduled by a teacher under any circumstance. Furthermore: ● Once a student is discharged from a LHIN service, they are ineligible for the same LHIN services for one calendar year. ● Under extenuating circumstances, upon acceptance of a formal request directed to the VP, Teaching & Learning, a limited number of private sessions with the same therapist may be provided at the school. Parents are responsible to cover the cost of these additional appointments and pay the service provider directly. ● These extenuating circumstances must be agreed upon by the Havergal College Senior Administration prior to additional sessions being booked.

Upper School (Grades 7-12)

Head, Middle School (Grades 7 and 8) The Head, Middle School leads the Middle School Form Program, oversees student life and student engagement initiatives and manages the operational running of the Middle School. The Head, Middle School is responsible for student discipline in Grades 7 and 8. Head, Senior School (Grades 9-12) The Head, Senior School oversees the delivery of the Teacher Advisor (TA) Program for students in Grades 9 to 12. The TA Program operates within the House system, which plays an essential role in keeping Senior School students connected to teachers through small, informal, cross-grade, House-designated groups that are led by House Advisors. The Head, Senior School also ensures the school’s progressive discipline framework is judiciously enforced in the Senior School in consultation with the VP School Life & Student Wellness and the VP Teaching & Learning. Finally, the Head, Senior School oversees the Grade Lead program, a Senior School initiative that aims to create grade-specific programming throughout the school year in collaboration with grade-specific Guidance Counsellors and elected student leaders. Head, Boarding School (Grades 9–12) The Head, Boarding School provides oversight and leadership for the Boarding School program, working closely with Dons and Junior Dons to create a safe, nurturing and supportive home-away-from-home for Havergal’s Boarding community. The Head, Boarding School also collaborates with the VP School Life & Student Wellness, subject teachers, School Nurse, Guidance Counsellors, the school’s Social Worker and other members of the Student Support Team to ensure that the academic, social, emotional and wellness needs of Boarders are met. Form Teachers (Grades 7 and 8) In Grade 7 and 8, students meet with their designated Form teachers in small same-grade Forms four mornings each week. The Form teacher oversees attendance, announcements, uniform checks and the Form program. There are eight designated Form teachers per grade.

House Advisors House Advisors are House leaders whose job it is to oversee and guide their Teacher Advisor (TA) colleagues when implementing the TA program. They guide and support House Captains to develop and deliver a House program. Teacher Advisors (Grades 9 to 12) Students in Grades 9 to 12 are organized in Houses through small cross-grade Teacher Advisor (TA) groups of approximately 10 to 12 students. The prevailing goal of the TA Program is to build relationships and a sense of community between TAs and students, as well as amongst the students in the group. TA groups meet four mornings each week and an advisory program is delivered two times a month on Tuesday mornings. The goal of Tuesday morning advisory meetings is to both build relationships and deliver a curriculum that is integral to the Havergal experience. The TA can offer general social-emotional support, but may also direct students to other resources within the school as needed. The TA oversees attendance, announcements and uniform checks. Grade Leads There are two designated Grade Leads per grade in the Senior School. Each Grade Lead pair is led by a faculty member and a Guidance Counsellor. Grade Leads work with the Head, Senior School Students, TAs and elected student leaders (Student Grade Reps) to develop grade-wide and grade-specific programming and events throughout the school year. Department Heads Department Heads are the teaching and learning specialists in their respective disciplines and work closely with their departmental colleagues. In this role, they remain knowledgeable and current on pedagogical issues, strategies and approaches to support an aligned vision for teaching and learning at Havergal.

Guidance Counsellors The Guidance department provides support and information to assist Upper School students and their parents in making educational, career and personal development decisions. In working one-on-one and in groups with Middle and Senior School students, Guidance Counsellors help our girls understand and navigate the highs and lows of adolescence, friendships and the accompanying sting of disappointment that is often felt in the face of setbacks. In meeting the developmental social, emotional, academic and mental health wellness needs of students, Havergal’s Guidance Counsellors act as liaisons with teaching staff, Boarding staff, Wellness staff, Chaplains and, where appropriate, external agencies. Students are placed with their respective Guidance Counsellor by House. There are grade specific initiatives that frame the Guidance program. ● Grades 7 and 8: Executive functioning & leadership skills. ● Grades 9 and 10: Academic planning & transition ● Grades 11 and 12: University planning and the post-secondary application process. Learning Support Specialists Learning Support Specialists collaborate with teachers to support the academic, social and emotional learning needs of Upper School students. In addition, this team works one-on-one with students who have identified learning needs and their teachers to establish and implement teaching, learning and / or assessment accommodations required for student success. School-Based Social Worker The full-time school-based Social Worker meets with students and families throughout the year. When necessary, the Social Worker refers students to external healthcare providers. Counselling appointments are confidential and at no cost to students and their families. School Nurses Staffed by Registered Nurses, the Wellness Centre supports the physical well-being of Havergal students. Wellness Centre staff work to educate students with respect to their health and wellness needs, while treating medical concerns according to medical directives issued by the school’s consulting physician. Physiotherapists Qualified physiotherapists provide treatment to Havergal Upper School student athletes in the treatment room located on the lowest level of the Athletic Centre. Students needing significant treatment will be referred to support outside of the school.
Athletic Director (AD)
The Upper School Athletic Director provides direction and oversight to the co-curricular athletic program in Grades 7 to 12. The AD ensures that Havergal’s Athletics program provides a continuum of development in our youngest to oldest athletes.
