GLOSSARY OF HAVERGAL TERMS

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) Bring Your Own Device is an approach to technology in which all students in Grades 5 to 12 have access to and use their own personally-selected and purchased computing devices rather than using school owned devices. Candlelight Ceremony (Grades 11 & 12) A longstanding tradition at Havergal College, Candlelight is a symbolic passing of the torch from soon-to-be graduates to the Grad class of the following year. Taking place on the evening before Graduation, each Grade 11 student receives her Grad Belt from a graduating student, marking the change of leadership from one class to the next. Celebration Saturday Celebration Saturday is traditionally in the last week of September or beginning of October. This event brings together the entire school community—including students, faculty, staff, parents, Old Girls/Alums as well as neighbours—to put our mission into action. This is an event that asks each of us to make a difference through volunteering—whether it be time, talent or treasure, as we work to raise funds for our Community Partners. It is a unique event among independent schools as the focus is outward, drawing on the whole community to work together, through fun and engagement for the partnerships that our students benefit from working with and for. Chapel of St. Cecilia The Havergal Chapel is located on the B Level in the Upper School and is used for quiet reflection, prayers from a multi-faith perspective and Anglican services. Communion is an optional offering and is celebrated monthly. Special services for Advent, Ash Wednesday and Holy Week are also held in this space. The school Chaplains extend a warm invitation to all to come in for conversation or pastoral care. Christmas Concerts & Carol Service In the Junior School, there are Christmas concerts for the JK/SK and Grades 1-6. The Kindergarten concert is hosted on campus and the Grade 1-6 concert is hosted at St. Paul’s Bloor Street.

The Upper School hosts a Carol Service at St. Paul’s Bloor Street, modelled after the service of “Nine Lessons and Carols” from King’s College in Cambridge, UK.

St. Paul’s Bloor Street is Havergal’s first parish church.

Class Rep A Class Rep is an Old Girl/Alum who represents her graduating class by keeping in touch with as many other Old Girls/Alums from her year as possible. This group of women helps to organize reunions and prepares news of classmates for publication in the Chronicle , the annual publication of the Old Girls/Alums.
