CLASS OF 1967 ENDOWMENT TOTAL AS AT MAY 31, 2019
CLASS REP: Jane Stevens Westlake In last year’s Chronicle , from 1946-2018, 72 years submitted Class News. As 1967 grads, most of us are approaching this same time span. I remember Susan Counsell (Siri Dharma Khalsa) in Grade 13 prayers reading “To everything there is a season,” – everything reflecting the seasons of life’s cycle evolving. Judith (Judy) Mills Hatley responded to the question: “What’s the one thing that you read/saw/did/experienced this year that had the most impact?” Judy reflected, “saying goodbye to the previous generation and greeting another new member of the next generation.” Judy enjoys grandchildren, tennis and platform tennis. She has a cottage on Lake of Bays and is president of the Lake of Bays Heritage Foundation – fighting off land developers, providing nature events and information for the community and documenting the region’s history. Nora McKay Adamson ’s year has been busy with her husband closing his surgical practice, so she “can now retire too!” Two granddaughters were born this year. Nora has “joyful days with six grandchildren.” She and Wendy Thompson are more than halfway through the end-to-end Bruce Trail hikes, which are a magnificent way to see our beautiful province. Candice Carlisle Cassils has fun playing Canasta with friends in Westmount Park in Montreal. The enjoyment and good company are delightful and addictive, so they play all afternoon. Candice sings in the Women Making Music choir (although she hadn’t sung since Havergal) and also with The McGill Choral Society. Candice had knee replacement surgery in March of this year. Cathy Gray Gravely volunteers with the Bayview Pixies who designed and maintained plantings and watered trees as part of a sustainable effort in Leaside. She plans to hike and travel in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland including a gallop on an Irish beach in defiance of her “big” birthday this year. Cathy enjoys four grandchildren and is spending more time in Bobcaygeon, where she is involved with an environmental group. Charmaine Jones has a functioning hovercraft! She and Linda live on a small island. They are the only humans, and the ice is much less predictable
due to climate change. Mary Redrupp James ’s daughter has two daughters, one two-and-a-half and another three months. One of her sons has 13-year-old twins (a boy and girl), and her other son has a 14-year-old boy and a seven-year-old girl. Mary adds: “Lucky I can keep it all straight!” Last summer, she and her husband went to England and Scotland. Jane Stevens Westlake has recently welcomed a second granddaughter, Lauren Elizabeth, and luckily, she and her sister don’t live too far away from Granny. She volunteers at Sunnybrook in the veterans wing and in the Havergal Archives with Havergal Old Girls Joan Winearls 1955 and Luba Frastacky 1963. Sonia Stratton Ryerson will retire this year after 30 years of working in long-term care. She says she “can’t wait to have a summer off!” Recapping on a celebratory note, Wendy Thompson received the 2018 Havergal Old Girls Life Achievement Award this past October. She and her partner Bill spent three interesting weeks in Ecuador in November, the highlight being 10 days in the Galapagos Islands, hiking and snorkelling. Wendy was eagerly awaiting her first grandchild; her daughter Sarah Rea 2002’s baby is due as this news is written. Judith (Judy) Welch Schuett is still tutoring several children, doing occasional supply teaching and assorted school things and reading like crazy – about 23 books since last summer. Judy loves her Kobo. Andrea Young Bernier and her husband spent a month in the Costa del Sol in southern Spain where the weather was remarkably fine in contrast to last year’s rain and cool temperatures. Andrea survives winter’s icy grip by
escaping from it! All is very well. Her grandchildren are finishing high school or in college, and travelling has included a crossing on the Queen Mary 2, a visit to cousins in England. Andrea is involved with her local Unitarian Fellowship and hopes to travel further afield next year, perhaps to Africa.
