A Family Tradition of Giving

annual fund, a tradition I’ve carried on for 35 years. Our family values of giving back to the community have shaped me personally and professionally. I see supporting Havergal as a responsibility and a privilege. I am personally not interested in whether I receive recognition.” This enduring commitment from Old Girls is an important part of keeping Havergal strong and relevant in a rapidly changing world. It is this sense of responsibility and school community that imprinted the importance of a culture of philanthropy on this Old Girl for life. After years of supporting Havergal College with annual donations, Hogarth Baker made the decision to deepen her philanthropic commitment by including Havergal College as a recipient in her estate planning. “The opportunity to support Havergal in my will came from my desire to further enrich the future lives of girls who will contribute to the world, in a variety of professions, careers and voluntary endeavours.”

She donned her Havergal uniform every five years for her reunions. I was excited to wear the uniform myself when I started at Havergal in preschool.” Reflecting on her time at the school, she says: “I am who I am, in large part, because of the important influence of friends and teachers from Havergal, along with the traditions, community spirit, values and experiences we share across generations.” On the day she graduated from Havergal, Hogarth Baker recalls: “I remember mom giving me the money to make my first gift, saying that Havergal needed me to donate now and every year. I made my first undesignated donation to Havergal’s

One of the most common and easiest ways to provide a lasting legacy is to include a bequest provision in your will. “Planned giving is one of the most profound opportunities for people to make significant and meaningful gifts that reflect their beliefs and values while leaving a unique legacy to memorialize those values and beliefs during their lifetime and beyond,” explains Tony diCosmo, Havergal’s Executive Director of Advancement and Community Relations. “If my annual gifts and bequest to Havergal College play a small part in shaping graduates who are global citizens with a social conscience, confidence and passion, then it is an investment in our collective future that I make willingly and happily,” says Hogarth Baker.
