Reflections of Havergal: 1994-2019

Finding Yourself Through Drama BTI , April 2013 By Maddie Foerster

I began as a quiet and reserved student at Havergal College back in 2009. In my defense, I was in an entirely new environment and still in the early stages of figuring out who I wanted to be. I am now entering my graduating year with new values and perspective. Reflecting on myself both as a person and a student; I can identify plenty of transformation. Although I can sometimes still be called out on my quiet streak, I no longer relate this trait to one of shyness, but rather to my brain going into overdrive. Most importantly, I have discovered the wonders of expression and creation, and this growth can be attributed in part to the Drama program that exists within our ivy-covered walls. Drama can be terrifying at first; my 2009 self would have rather done anything than get up in a class full of girls I barely knew and “perform”. In reality, the fear of performing is a minor cost compared to the joy and lessons drama can teach you. Eventually, the fear goes away and suddenly you are acting in Upper School productions, directing your classmates and even writing plays of your own. Drama can even give you insight into what you want to make of your future. This year, the Drama department has lined up an exciting program for any drama lover, from the passionate to the “just interested” type. This December, we have teacher-directed One Act Plays on the theme of absurdism. Then, the musical Anything Goes will be performed in February. Both of these will be produced in collaboration with Crescent School. In April, we have student-directed, student-written One Act Plays and auditions will be opening in the near future for these. We also can look forward to the One Act Plays and Docudramas put on by the Grade 12 Drama class in the spring. Regardless of your age or time spent at Havergal, why not take the blooming of this school year as a chance to try something new. From actor to audience member, set design to lighting, you’ll see there are many ways to get involved. All that’s left is for you to take action!
