Reflections of Havergal: 1994-2019

Sometimes there are full renovations, as detailed in an article titled “The Suite Hereafter” by Christine Johnston that was featured in the Fall 2005 issue of Torch : During the summer months, Old Girl and interior designer Samantha Farjo 1993 worked with Havergal staff to change the room into a cozy, comfortable living space to which any girl would be glad to come home. The project was funded through the Advancement Office, and Samantha kindly volunteered her expertise and her time. The Boarding School at Havergal has been a second home to students since it opened in 1894. More than 100 years later, in 1997, Cilla Kent, mother of Trilby Kent 2001, contributed a very thoughtful piece on the Boarding School to the Chronicle , identifying a paradox at the heart of the experience Havergal offers its Boarders: “In the end, it’s their differences that pull the Boarders together.”

Changing Boarders Chronicle , 1997

“Dean of Students Brenda Robson says enabling students to make independent decisions requires a careful balancing act: ‘If there is too much control, the only way students feel they have power is to break rules. One of our challenges is considering the individual’s needs without undermining the good of the community; balancing respect for authority with the needs of the group.’”
