Havergal's Uncalendar, 2020-21 Academic Year

INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES

Students may take a maximum of three interdisciplinary studies courses—one each of Interdisciplinary Studies, Grade 11, Open (IDC3O); Interdisciplinary Studies, Grade 12, University Preparation (IDC4U); and Interdisciplinary Studies, Grade 12, Open (IDC4O).

Special notes: This interdisciplinary course provides students with an opportunity to create informative print media for the school and community through the production of the school’s yearbook. Students investigate sources of information and compare differing perspectives on key issues, developing both a sense of news and news judgment through yearbook entries and photojournalism. They also learn editorial conventions and practices, principles of print and management skills as they explore legal and ethical uses of information that is made public. Career options in journalism, photojournalism and print production are also explored. This course combines the expectations for Interdisciplinary Studies (Grade 11, Open) with selected expectations from Communications Technology (Grade 11, University/College Preparation), Media Arts (Grade 11, Open) and Media Studies (Grade 11, Open). Recommended Preparation: ENG2D – English, Grade 10, Academic AP CAPSTONE DIPLOMA PROGRAM HSB4UP – AP Seminar and IDC4UP – AP Research AP Capstone is a diploma program based on two AP Courses: AP Seminar and AP Research. Both are year-long courses that focus on developing critical thinking, research, collaboration, analysis, evidence-based arguments, writing, time management and presentation skills. They support and further develop the skills taught in our liberal arts program. In AP Seminar, students investigate real-world issues from multiple perspectives, gathering and analyzing information from various sources in order to develop credible and valid evidence based arguments. In AP Research, students cultivate the skills and discipline necessary to conduct independent research in order to produce and defend a scholarly academic paper. Students typically take AP Seminar in Grade 11, followed by AP Research in Grade 12. The AP Seminar is a prerequisite for AP Research. In both courses, students investigate a variety of topics in multiple disciplines and may choose to explore topics related to other courses they’re taking.

GRADE 11 IDC3O – Applied Journalism (Yearbook), Grade 11, Open 1 CREDIT As part of the Yearbook Crew, you will develop the school’s yearbook from initial planning to final execution and submission for printing. Through the process, the Yearbook Crew is responsible for planning the look, taking the photos, designing the page layouts and exporting the book for press. You will start the year planning the theme, the physical size and the content of the yearbook. You will then explore graphic design through the planning of page design for the yearbook. These designs are transferred to the computer using page layout applications. For content, you will start the year learning some basics of photo composition and photojournalism. You will then take photos of events, clubs and teams during the year. These images are then colour corrected on the computer and inserted into the layouts. After proofing, the layouts are exported for press and finally distributed to the whole student body. In addition, you will learn project management through the development of a large project that requires cooperation among all of the students in the class.
