Havergal College Grad Profile 2022

Havergal College’s strong liberal arts program meets and exceeds the expectations of the Ontario Ministry of Education. All courses are university-preparatory and are at the advanced level. A credit is granted with the successful completion of a course for which a minimum of 110 hours has been scheduled. Many students elect to write Advanced Placement exams. Upon graduation, students receive the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Educational Philosophy Havergal offers a unique education based on leading instructional methods tailored to the learning needs of our students. Our fluid and adaptive program allows us to select those approaches that best serve our students while reflecting our core values of integrity, inquiry, compassion and courage. A liberal arts foundation fosters an attitude of inquiry and encourages students to be open to new ideas and varied perspectives. It cultivates the curiosity and collaborative mindset that a rapidly changing world demands. It also promotes the leadership qualities needed in this unpredictable global context: adaptability, innovation, courage, comfort with ambiguity and willingness to alter the status quo. Drawn to Havergal because of its reputation as a liberal arts-focused school, Safa was thrilled to join the Junior School in Grade 6. With a passion for languages, arts and sciences, her love of learning was nurtured at Havergal. In the Upper School, she immersed herself in many arts-related programs, including the band, choir and anything theatre-related. “I love acting because you really have to understand the perspective of the characters and the playwright,” she says. “This encouraged me to start writing my own plays.” Her French and Drama teachers encouraged her to enter the Toronto French Theatre contest Les Zinspiré.e.s. in Grade 10, and her play was selected as a finalist across Canada to be performed by a team of professional actors. “For me, studying languages opens new doors to connect with others,” she explains. “Figuring out how to interact with people based on their unique stories is appealing to me.” At Havergal, Safa put her communication skills in action as the co-founder of a student diversity affinity group. This idea of connection continues to be the driving force behind Safa’s interest in studying Health Sciences at Queen’s University, where she can continue to engage in critical analysis, engagement, conversation and out-of-the-box thinking in her studies.

Starting Havergal in Junior Kindergarten prepared Marley to lead as School Captain with a strong sense of community and responsibility. “It’s all about service leadership and helping the people around you,” she explains of her work ethos. Born into a family of Havergalians (her mother and aunts are also HC graduates), Marley understood the benefits of making the most of her time on campus. She got involved with the Forum for Change in the Junior School, which ignited in her a passion for community service that continued into the Upper School. This included participating in Havergal’s Global Learning and Leading Diploma, a multi-year certificate program that focuses on social justice work and outreach. Outside of school, Marley is often exploring the world of business through internships in industries such as fashion and interior design. During the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, she found success in creating an e-zine focused on social justice issues, with submissions from student writers from around the world. Today, Marley is a part of the entrepreneurial culture at Stanford University, where she is learning more about management science engineering and economics, ready to discover where her ambition will take her next.
