Meet Some of Our Graduates from the Class of 2022 At Havergal College, we offer our students the opportunity to excel in academics, arts, athletics and leadership. When you look at the 127 students in the 2022 graduating class, it is clear that these future leaders have the tools they need to succeed, whatever their passions. They have earned scholarships, created dynamic visionary projects, led their teams to victory and transformed the Havergal experience into unique versions of excellence. Grads

QuARMS—HEALTH SCIENCE Queen’s University Zoë Mohan

Zoë’s Havergal journey started in Grade 7, a year that sparked her love for school and learning. “Middle School was such a formative time in my life, which is why I wanted to give back as Middle School Prefect in Grade 12,” she says. She was drawn to the balance between academics, athletics and co curriculars at Havergal and immersed herself in leadership opportunities as early as Grade 7. In addition to focusing on the sciences, Zoë also took every language course available at Havergal, with a special interest in Mandarin. Outside of school, she was a volunteer karate instructor at the local YMCA and a Youth Volunteer at Women’s College Hospital. “Talking to patients and their families in a healthcare setting taught me that these conversations are different because they require more patience and understanding.” With an interest in becoming a doctor, Zoë was one of only 10 students across Canada to be accepted into the Queen’s University QuARMS program, an accelerated route to medical school. “My goal is to work toward supporting ethnocentric healthcare, which includes acknowledging diversity, understanding the needs of different populations and providing services accordingly.” Zoë is optimistic that she can make a difference in the world one patient at a time.

An athlete who excels at rugby, soccer, hockey and ultimate, Kennedy shared her love of Havergal’s Athletics Program as Sports Prefect in her graduating year. A member of the Canadian Rugby Development Academy, she joined Havergal in Grade 9 in awe of the school’s sense of spirit and community. In Grade 10, she went on exchange to Perth, Australia, where she made friendships for life and gained some independence. Kennedy was an early entrepreneur, starting her own swimming lesson business at the age of 14. “I registered my program with the Royal Lifesaving Society, and it didn’t take long until my entire summer schedule was filled with kids taking swimming lessons in my backyard,” she explains. “Watching children learn to love the water is my favourite part of my business.” Outside of athletics, Kennedy is interested in studying business and participated on Havergal’s DECA team. She is also a passionate advocate for cancer research and was a community volunteer hockey and softball coach. Kennedy is currently a member of the Women’s Varsity Rugby Team at Western University, where she is enrolled in Business Management and Organizational Studies and will complete her degree at the Western Ivey School of Business in her third and fourth years of university. Beatrice Dal Bello Nova Scotia Collegeof Art andDesign FINE ARTS Beatrice’s green and gold school pride was contagious, which is why she was elected as Clubs and Spirit Prefect in her graduating year. Starting at Havergal in Junior Kindergarten, she was intrigued by the older student spirit leaders and developed an interest in taking on a role where she could express her school pride in innovative ways. This interest in creative expression attracted Beatrice to the fine arts at an early age. “In the Junior School, there was a project where we replicated the same two famous paintings every year from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6,” she explains. “Seeing my progress over the years was really fascinating to me and it drew me to continue exploring the visual arts.” Her grandmother, who is also an artist, motivated Beatrice to apply to the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD), where she is currently pursuing a degree in Fine Arts. Outside of the arts, Beatrice followed in her mother’s footsteps (a Havergal Boarding student from the Class of 1986) as a member of the Havergal Rowing Team. Beatrice was honoured to be the team’s coxswain for four years because it was an opportunity for her to use her energy and enthusiasm to guide and encourage her teammates to victory.

University of Waterloo BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING

Living in Boarding for three years was a formative time for Mathilda, whose hometown is a 1.5 hour drive from Toronto. “My mom was also a Boarder at Havergal and she always talked about how it was a pivotal point for her in becoming an adult and maturing,” she recalls. Her grandmother was the first in the family to attend Havergal, graduating from the Day School in 1959. It didn’t take long for the Boarding School to feel like Mathilda’s second home, a place where she felt safe exploring different interests. She joined the Field Hockey and Curling Teams; played flute in the Symphonic Band; volunteered as the Photography Coordinator for school yearbook; and took on leadership roles such as Boarding Junior Don and Head Junior Don. Mathilda is currently attending the University of Waterloo for Biomedical Engineering. “I love that it combines my two favourite sciences: biology and physics.” She hopes her career takes her to different places around the world, where she can help people with their medical needs. She also aspires to give back to Havergal through bursary and scholarship support. “Education is an important pillar, especially for women, and I’d like to help others benefit the way I did.”

Havergal College’s strong liberal arts program meets and exceeds the expectations of the Ontario Ministry of Education. All courses are university-preparatory and are at the advanced level. A credit is granted with the successful completion of a course for which a minimum of 110 hours has been scheduled. Many students elect to write Advanced Placement exams. Upon graduation, students receive the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Drawn to Havergal because of its reputation as a liberal arts-focused school, Safa was thrilled to join the Junior School in Grade 6. With a passion for languages, arts and sciences, her love of learning was nurtured at Havergal. In the Upper School, she immersed herself in many arts-related programs, including the band, choir and anything theatre-related. “I love acting because you really have to understand the perspective of the characters and the playwright,” she says. “This encouraged me to start writing my own plays.” Her French and Drama teachers encouraged her to enter the Toronto French Theatre contest Les Zinspiré.e.s. in Grade 10, and her play was selected as a finalist across Canada to be performed by a team of professional actors. “For me, studying languages opens new doors to connect with others,” she explains. “Figuring out how to interact with people based on their unique stories is appealing to me.” At Havergal, Safa put her communication skills in action as the co-founder of a student diversity affinity group. This idea of connection continues to be the driving force behind Safa’s interest in studying Health Sciences at Queen’s University, where she can continue to engage in critical analysis, engagement, conversation and out-of-the-box thinking in her studies.

Starting Havergal in Junior Kindergarten prepared Marley to lead as School Captain with a strong sense of community and responsibility. “It’s all about service leadership and helping the people around you,” she explains of her work ethos. Born into a family of Havergalians (her mother and aunts are also HC graduates), Marley understood the benefits of making the most of her time on campus. She got involved with the Forum for Change in the Junior School, which ignited in her a passion for community service that continued into the Upper School. This included participating in Havergal’s Global Learning and Leading Diploma, a multi-year certificate program that focuses on social justice work and outreach. Outside of school, Marley is often exploring the world of business through internships in industries such as fashion and interior design. During the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, she found success in creating an e-zine focused on social justice issues, with submissions from student writers from around the world. Today, Marley is a part of the entrepreneurial culture at Stanford University, where she is learning more about management science engineering and economics, ready to discover where her ambition will take her next.

Co-curricular Activities Havergal College offers a wide range of co-curricular activities to meet the interests of students. Individual talents and interests can be pursued through activities and participation in clubs, athletics and school life, including more than 75 athletic teams and outstanding music, art, drama and literary programs. honours its traditions while respecting diverse faiths. Community Prayers provide a focus for spiritual growth and include hymns and prayers, as well as opportunities to learn about other faiths and our role as global citizens. Leadership, Community & House At Havergal, every student from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 develops leadership skills through active participation in the school and broader community. Throughout their time at Havergal, each student belongs to one of 10 Houses. In the House system, students come together in smaller, cross-grade groups and learn to co operate for the common good and are given opportunities to develop the qualities of initiative and leadership. As they progress through the Junior (JK to Grade 6), Middle (Grades 7 and 8) and Senior (Grades 9 to 12) Schools, their leadership opportunities and level of responsibility increase. Students at all levels share in the school’s commitment to many long-lasting community partnerships and, through their involvement, have opportunities to live the school’s mission: Preparing young women to make a difference .
