Danya Assaf

Queen’s University  COMMERCE

Danya enjoyed being Admissions Prefect in her Grad year because it gave her the opportunity to share her love of Havergal with others. She vividly remembers her tour of the school in Grade 3 and how it inspired her to join the community. During her eight years at Havergal, she was involved in the Community Council as well as the Soccer and Rowing teams. An experience that she will never forget is learning the art of cooking at Le Cordon Bleu cooking school in Paris, France, through Havergal’s Global Experience Program. With a passion for math and business, Danya’s favourite high school courses were Grade 12 Accounting and Grade 12 Economics as well as AP Calculus and Vectors. She is currently pursuing a degree in Commerce at Queen’s University and hopes to be an entrepreneur one day. Outside of school, she was involved in Voices of Toronto, a local organization that uses art to voice the opinions of real citizens of Toronto. This experience has inspired her to be an ambassador for others as well. “I have been fortunate to receive an incredible education from Havergal and I feel it is my obligation as a Canadian Muslim woman to advocate for others whose voices may not be heard.”

As the Boarding Prefect in her graduating year, Osuare moved from Milton, Ontario, to Havergal’s Boarding School in Grade 9. “It was a big change for me, coming from a small town. I didn’t know what to expect, but over the years being a Boarder has helped me become more self-aware and independent,” she says. During her four years at Havergal, Osuare was a member of the Field Hockey and Track & Field teams as well as the Pre-Med and HOSA-Future Health Professionals clubs. As Boarding Prefect, she worked with the Junior Dons to make the Boarding School a fun and comfortable home- away-from-home. In her spare time, she worked on the Lemonade Stand initiative at the Holland-Bloorview Kids Hospital Foundation. With a dream of becoming a doctor one day, Osuare is currently studying science at the University of British Columbia. “Everyone wants to have an impact in the world. I want to reach out and help people who are marginalized and less fortunate.”

Joining Havergal in Grade 1, Selina discovered her love of science and interest in medicine at an early age. During her secondary school years, she served as a research assistant at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in the fields of oncology and geriatrics. Having published 17 manuscripts and 11 book chapters in peer-reviewed medical journals, Selina also worked with a geriatrician at Sunnybrook to provide recommendations to the Canadian government for the national dementia strategy. She shared her passion for patient care with her peers at Havergal by establishing the Dementia Awareness Program, where students volunteer at a nursing facility and build intergenerational relationships with individuals with dementia. In 2015, Selina co-founded the Dignity for All program at Havergal College and Crescent School, aimed at helping newly arrived refugees from Syria. In addition to these activities, she led Havergal’s Cancer Education Group and Pre-Medicine Club, and was also a member of several co-curricular groups at school, including the Grenoble Homework Club, House Executive, Arts Council, Community Council, the Badminton team and the Orchestra, in which she played First Violin. Selina is currently studying in the Honours Health Sciences program at McMaster University, where she hopes to pursue a career in medicine.

With a passion for music, composition and writing, Emma was attracted to Havergal’s Music program and ensemble opportunities. As a new student in Grade 7, she immediately found her place in the Middle School Choir and was involved in various choirs, bands and orchestras throughout her time at the school, culminating in a position as Choir Head in her graduating year. Her talent and interests led her to Brown University, where she is focusing her studies on music composition, history and literature. “My favourite courses at Havergal were history, literature and the classics: subjects that blend history and art together to shed light on various eras,” she explains. Outside of the classroom, Emma supported her other passion for physics by volunteering at the David Dunlap Observatory, an astronomical observatory and research facility. A true academic, she feels that Havergal has provided her with a strong foundation of knowledge for her to pursue her dreams. “I’m looking forward to distilling down my true passions in the Humanities and continuing to dive deep into my fields of interest.”

Our Curriculum

Havergal College’s strong liberal arts program meets and exceeds the expectations of the Ontario Ministry of Education. All courses are university- preparatory and are at the advanced level. A credit is granted with the successful completion of a course for which a minimum of 110 hours has been scheduled. Many students elect to write Advanced Placement exams. Upon graduation, students receive the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Cassie loved leading the Gators as Captain (and goalie) of Havergal’s U20 Hockey team in her graduating year. During her six years at the school, she was involved in a variety of sports including hockey, basketball and softball. “I learned a lot of leadership skills through sports,” she says. She was honoured as Athlete of the Year in Grade 10 and won the Greisman Cup for softball in her graduating year. During her time in the Senior School, she was a member of House Executive and the Junior School Council and was elected as one of the Senior Year Presidents. Cassie is currently studying Engineering at Princeton University, where she is also goalie for the Princeton Tigers Women’s Hockey team. With a passion for the math side of engineering, she hopes to pursue a career in operations, research and financial engineering, developing algorithms for businesses. She looks forward to staying connected with the Havergal community as an Old Girl and hopes to change the status of female athletes by advocating for more equal opportunities.

Alexandra had a good gut feeling about Havergal when she came for her tour. “The school seemed very friendly, open and inclusive,” she says. Coming to Havergal in Grade 7, she was involved in a variety of activities including visual arts, field hockey, tennis, snowboarding, golf, Model UN and AIM camp in the summers. Over the years, her teachers continued to nurture her interests in art and science, which led her to look into different paths of study that combined the two. “I was studying cell generation and tissue engineering in Physics and I realized that this is what I am interested in doing as a career,” she says. “I like medicine and health sciences, but I also enjoy engineering and math. I want to use my creativity to develop the solutions to problems, which is the engineering side of science.” Alexandra is currently studying Integrated Biomedical Engineering and Health Sciences at McMaster University, which is the perfect fit for her to fully develop her academic interests.

Health & Well-Being Havergal is committed to the wellness of each student and focuses on healthy, active living. Mindful of the need for balance, Havergal equips each girl with the tools she needs to respond to challenges. The school is a place of support, belonging and engagement. Every student is supported and cared for so that she may reach and maintain the highest level of physical, mental, social, emotional and cognitive health possible while attending Havergal. Leadership, Community & House At Havergal, every student from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 develops leadership skills through active participation in the school and broader community. Throughout her time at Havergal, each student belongs to one of 10 Houses. In the House system, girls come together in smaller, cross- grade groups and learn to cooperate for the common good and are given opportunities to develop the qualities of initiative and leadership. As she progresses through the Junior (JK to Grade 6), Middle (Grades 7 and 8) and Senior (Grades 9 to 12) Schools, her leadership opportunities and level of responsibility increase.
