Assessment Accommodations for Final Evaluations Students with Previously Established Accommodations • A student with established accommodations will meet with her Guidance Counsellor or Learning Support Specialist prior to the final evaluation period to review existing assessment accommodations and to determine which accommodations to use for final evaluations. • The student must use the same accommodations for all of the final evaluations. Students with New Psycho-Educational Assessments or New Accommodations Requests • New psycho-educational assessments or requests for accommodations must be received at least three weeks before final evaluations begin, if the assessment accommodations are to be considered for that year’s final evaluations. • Assessments received after this date will be considered for implementation in September in the following academic year, except under extenuating circumstances. • All physician notes are to be provided to the appropriate Guidance or Learning Support Specialist, who will consult with the VP Teaching & Learning to discuss reasonable accommodations for the final evaluations. • If a student arrives at school on the morning of a final evaluation with a doctor’s note requesting new accommodations, the final evaluations for that day will be rescheduled to the conflict day to give the school time to review the note and to consider the reasonableness of the accommodation suggestions. • All other final evaluations will continue as scheduled with accommodations that are deemed reasonable by the school. Extenuating Circumstances • All students are required to sit their respective final assessments when scheduled; however, there are exceptional circumstances that may require a student’s evaluation timetable be modified. • These situations are considered on a case-by-case basis. • Students not able to write their final evaluations for medical reasons at their regularly scheduled time must submit a letter by their attending physician documenting the reason for the request to the appropriate Guidance Counsellor or Learning Support Specialist, who will then discuss the request with the VP Teaching & Learning. • Reasonable alternative arrangements will be discussed with parents/guardians.

English Language Learners

English language learners are students whose first language is a language other than English or is a variety of English that is significantly different from the variety used for instruction in Ontario schools. All students who are admitted to Havergal are expected to be proficient in English. Students in their first two years at Havergal who have been educated in a language other than English or French will be given extra time and a dictionary or electronic translator on all assessments as deemed necessary.

Reta Weston Library Resource Centre

The Reta Weston Library Resource Centre is located in the Upper School and provides programs and services for students, faculty and staff. The collection includes both print and non-print materials including electronic resources. These reflect school curricula as well as recreational reading. The automated Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) provides computer searches of our library collection. Students receive instruction on library skills and research methods. Virtually all resources may be borrowed with the exception of current issues of magazines and newspapers, which must be used within the library. Terms of loan include overnight (sign out after 3:30 pm, return by 8:30 am the next school morning) and two-week periods. The library collection is a shared resource dependent upon the honourable and responsible use by all. Materials that are lost are replaced at the borrower’s expense. Library loans may be renewed for an extended time, provided that they are not on reserve for another library user. Overdue library loans are subject to fines of 25 cents per school day to be paid directly at the circulation desk. Students should note the due date of their loans in their Student Agendas as a reminder to return materials on time or earlier. This responsibility is a crucial courtesy to other library users, ensuring their access to the library’s collection.
