NEUROSCIENCE AND ECONOMICS Dartmouth College Carol Rong

BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING Imperial College London Su Topaloglu

As an artist, scientist and entrepreneur, Carol has gained a lot of experience during her four years at Havergal. After beginning her journey in Grade 9, she immersed herself in student life: competing in field hockey, track and field and curling, as well as contributing to the school’s yearbook ( Ludemus ) and serving on the Wellbeing Council. With an interest in mental health advocacy, she later joined the World Health Organization Pan American Youth Committee. By Grade 12, Carol had the courage to run for the position of School Captain, which she is proud to have been elected to. Passionate about science and math, she focused her studies on biology, chemistry and calculus. Her curiosity about the world of science led her to volunteer at the University Health Network’s Krembil Brain Institute, where she supported a research project using machine learning to analyze seizure activity in mice. On the side, Carol runs a successful small online business creating and selling custom stickers. These interests and experiences have inspired her to study Neuroscience and Economics at Dartmouth College, with an interest in exploring the fields of neuroeconomics or medicine.

From her first day at Havergal in Junior Kindergarten, Su’s curiosity and drive led her to discover her passion in life: to improve the lives of others through biomedical engineering. Over the years, she found her stride competing in the pool with the Swim Team and mentoring younger swimmers through Havergal’s Coach Mentor Program. Her interest in computational advancements was sparked after taking Grade 11 Computer Science, which led her to sign up for and learn how to train AI models for medical research through Havergal’s HC-X Artificial Intelligence Digital Microcredential course. Su’s inquiring nature led her to various hands-on learning opportunities, from attending weekend engineering courses at the University of Toronto to shadowing researchers in a yeast-based lab and touring the labs at Toronto’s University Health Network so she could get a sense of what a career in research would be like. Currently, Su is studying Biomedical Engineering at Imperial College London, where she’s pursuing a four-year Master’s degree with the goal of specializing in computational biomedical engineering. After 14 years at Havergal College, she has a deep appreciation for the community she’s grown up in and takes away many memories of joyful learning.
