student’s academic support where possible. Additionally, the school may ask for supporting documentation before it sanctions an extended absence request.
Once the school has been approached by the parent and permission given for the student to miss an extended period of time by the VP Teaching & Learning or Head, Junior School, teachers will provide appropriate face-to-face and online support. As well, students are expected to take responsibility for meeting with their teachers in advance of a planned absence and to meet the expectations established by the teacher in every course. This includes the completion of all assignments in a timely manner, as specified by the teacher. Students must check their Veracross class page to see what they missed during their absence. Academic Policy for Students Going on Exchange: A Planned Extended Absence The school highly values exchange opportunities; however, students are responsible and accountable for Havergal course content while away. Our goal is to provide support to students such that they can benefit from the exchange without academic penalty. Exchange guidelines are specified in materials made available to parents and students. To ensure that students going on Exchange receive the support that they need, students will inform all of their teachers of their Exchange dates and discuss academic requirements well in advance of their departure. 2. In all subjects, course teams with the support of the Department Head will decide what is considered essential material that must be covered and how it will be covered while students are away on Exchange. Where feasible, students will not be expected to complete assessments due when they were away, although they are responsible for the material covered. In some courses, this may not be possible. 3. Teachers and students must meet prior to the student leaving on Exchange to determine what work must be completed and how / when it will be completed. This information will be recorded on the Google Academic Agreement Form, which will be shared with the Forum for Change Program Manager and all of the student’s teachers. This form must be completed prior to the student leaving on Exchange. 4. Students will not be asked to complete all tests missed or assignments already underway when they return, for up to one week upon their return. 5. Students must cover the essential material they have missed independently, but they should seek extra help upon their return to school for concepts that are unclear, as they normally would.
