What Do Achievement Levels Mean?

● Level 1: The student demonstrates the specified understanding, knowledge and skills with  limited effectiveness. Students must work at significantly improving learning in specific  areas, as necessary, if they are to be successful in the next grade/course.  ● Level 2: The student demonstrates the specified understanding, knowledge and skills with  some degree of effectiveness. Students performing at this level need to work on closing  identified learning gaps to ensure future success.  ● Level 3: The student demonstrates the specified understanding, knowledge and skills with  considerable effectiveness.  ● Level 4: The student thoroughly demonstrates the specified understanding, knowledge and  skills. Achievement at level 4 does not mean that the student has achieved expectations  beyond those specified for the grade/course.  The development of learning skills and work habits are an integral part of a student’s learning and  are critical to student success. Teachers work with students to help them understand and develop  learning skills and work habits. Teachers assess, evaluate and report on learning skills and work  habits separately from their assessing, evaluating and reporting on the achievement of curriculum  expectations. Unless learning skills are an integral part of the Ministry Curriculum Expectations,  their assessment is not included in the final grade. Students are assessed on six learning skills in  every subject for every reporting period. They are:   1. Responsibility:   Fulfills responsibilities and commitments within the learning environment;   2. Organization: Plans and organizes time, materials and equipment to accomplish tasks and  achieve goals;  3. Independent Work:  Independently monitors, assesses and revises plans to complete tasks  and meet goals;   4. Collaboration:   Learns with others to achieve a group goal and complete projects;   5. Initiative: Demonstrates curiosity and interest in learning and a willingness to extend their  learning and that of others; and   6. Self‑Regulation:  Sets and monitors progress towards individual goals.  Learning Skills and Work Habits
