Family Handbook 2018-19

Grades 11 & 12  ● Honours is achieved when a student earns an average mark of 80‑89.4% in her   best five courses .  ● Distinction is achieved when a student earns an average mark of at least 90% in her   best five courses .  Grade 7 & 8   students are not eligible for Honours and Distinction Roll accolades. The purpose of  Middle School is for students to focus on asking questions, developing executive functioning skills  and being curious in class. We do not want them preoccupied with achieving Honours and  Distinction accolades at a time in their cognitive & social development when Grade 7s and 8s  should feel safe to take academic risks and make mistakes. As well, some Middle School students  worry that not achieving Honours or Distinction accolades would adversely affect their university  admission prospects. This is a completely unwarranted concern. Our graduates get accepted to  highly selective postsecondary institutions and programs in Canada and abroad, and not one of  them asks our Grade 12 applicants if they achieved Honour or Distinction status in Middle School.
