Academic Prac ces

Homework  Homework  is assigned by  teachers  to enhance and  reinforce  student  learning outside of  the  classroom. Homework assignments are based on  the Ministry of Educa on’s  curriculum  expecta ons and are designed  to  require no addi onal  teaching outside of  the  classroom.  Homework  should be engaging and  relevant  to  students and  students must understand what  is  required of  them  to  complete  their assigned work. Parents  should never  complete assigned work  for  their daughter(s). Your  role  is  to encourage  your  child  to  complete assigned work, which  is  documented on  class webpages  through Veracross. What  follows are  some general guidelines  that  serve as a  framework  for  teachers  in assigning  subject‐specific homework.   The purpose of homework  is:  ● for  students  to  complete  class work;  ● to provide  students with opportuni es  for prac ce;  ● to  reinforce  learning when  the  student  can already  independently perform  the  skills  required  to be  successful;  ● to  reinforce previous  learning;  ● to prepare  students  for  future  lessons by giving  them opportuni es  to  reflect on  their  prior  knowledge;  ● to extend  learning by giving  students opportuni es  to deepen  their understanding and  relate  their  learning  to  the  real world;  ● to  support  the development of good work habits;  ● to build a  sense of  independence and personal  responsibility; and/or  ● to  reinforce  the a tude  that  learning  takes place outside as well as  inside  the  school.  Homework Guidelines  1. No homework will be assigned on  the  school day  immediately before  scheduled holidays  and  long weekends.  2. Teachers always want  to know  if a  student  is  struggling  to understand a  concept  in  class.  Some  students are  comfortable advoca ng  for  their own  learning needs by asking  ques ons  in  class when warranted. Others are more hesitant  to  seek help  in  this way.  Please encourage  your daughter  to approach her  subject  teacher during  class, or a er  class, when  she  is not grasping a  concept. And while Havergal encourages  students  from  Grade 5–12  to  reach out  in  this way,  the  truth  is  it  takes  me and prac ce. Please  reach
