Chronicle 2019

Joey responded: “Please tell the president the girls from Havergal College in Toronto send congratulations!” Oh, the memories and the laughter! Maureen Cunningham remembers Susan Harris Sniderman winning the bazaar raffle prize of a date with Fabian and the large photo of them printed in the Toronto Telegram , which created envy amongst classmates! Willo Murby Heesom and Janet McLeod remember entering a radio talent show in Buffalo at age 15. With Willo as the lead singer and Janet harmonizing, they sang Willo’s own composition, Little Joe . Karen Lamb Betteridge remembers Miss Muckle encouraging students to listen to the Saturday morning show and call in their votes. Alas, they didn’t win. Today, Willo continues to sing in two choirs in England and Janet sings karaoke weekly in Barbados. Well done, girls! We expect to hear a rendition of Little Joe at our 60th! Remembering our Junior School days: Roberta (Bobs) Ongley recalls in Grade 1 NOT answering to “Bobs”! She refused to answer dear Miss Holmes, who, puzzled, called her parents. Bobs soon relented! Karen Rechnitzer White remembers taking Betsy Bell Perkin ’s eyeglasses to wear, thinking she would become smarter! Judy Clarkson Galloway summed up our class’s special bond of friendships with wonderful memories over 13 CLASS REPS: Janet Cox Lumbers, Mary Davis Nelles and Nancy Lash Robinson We have not heard from very many of our classmates this year – please send us your news so we can do better next year. Last September, Bev Galley was invited to go to China as an early childhood education consultant. She visited schools in Beijing, Jinan, Hangzhou, Changzhou, Wuxi, Jiaxing and Shanghai. Bev enjoyed lecturing to the students at Zhenjiang University in Hangzhou. This was Bev’s third educational trip to China. Mary Brewin Lewis wrote to tell us of a special Libby Loach Ridgely Diversity and Mental Health Fund that has been established in Libby’s name to honour her nearly 20 years of dedication to helping children and CLASS OF 1962

years (now for some over 70 years). She loved our Polish dance performance in Grade 5 when we wore “authentic costumes” and flowered wreaths on our heads. She loved the fort in the ravine; you needed a key to be a member! Recent news: Lynn Snelgrove Creelman enjoys living near her daughter in Venice, California and caring for a blind 18-year-old Doberman pinscher. She keeps in touch with her son Patrick, who lives on Lamma Island in Hong Kong (where Jill Cumberland Trennum ’s son also lives – small world). Our energetic athlete Leith Drury is contracted with Canada’s national archery team as the mental performance coach. Last May, she went to Shanghai for a world cup tournament in which 40 countries were competing. She stayed longer to tour in China, fascinated by its 5,000-year history, its modernization and its diversity of geography and climate. The Chronicle ’s theme of “longevity” certainly encompasses the decades of our class’s long-lasting friendships. Despite challenges in life and the sadness of losses, we are resilient and positive, appreciating the fun and laughter we still share. Thank you, Havergal for your WONDERFUL legacy of our unwavering bonds of friendship.
