CLASS OF 1960

CLASS OF 1960 ENDOWMENT FOR ARCHIVES TOTAL AS AT MAY 31, 2019

CLASS REPS: Patricia (Pat) Weller Bent, Marsha Davis Brooks, Rosemary Elder Dick and Cynthia Thomas McLeod On the subject of longevity, Pat Wilson Scarlett highly recommends the thought-provoking book, Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End by Atul Gawande. Susan (Su) Russell revamped her idea of retiring! In September, she limited her counselling practice to working with women over 60, a largely unserved sector of the population. You can read more of her thoughts on the topic online by browsing “Su Russell aging with integrity.” It might be relevant to a few of you! Lynda (Fitz) Keyfetz Rapp contemplated retiring from her decorating business but decided she wasn’t ready. She says work keeps her “in the world” – young, creative and using her brain. Cynthia (Cyndy) McLeod retired from her post-retirement job as an oral historian for the Osgoode Society for Canadian Legal History. Her interests now include the Rosedale Ravine restoration project, CGUW and the University of Toronto. Ann Hutchison is the academic dean at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies at the University of Toronto. Her research takes her to England, where she and her husband stay in a retirement home for gentlemen of limited means. One resident is a 106-year-old doctor who still does cancer research. That definitely defines longevity. Ann Griffin McCall is marking 44 years as a professional artist with exhibitions in 2019/2020. Jane Allport Mottershead keeps busy volunteering at a women’s shelter, delivering library books to shut-ins and singing in the Pembroke Community Choir.

Mary Krug Ndlovu states that after living in Africa for 50 years, she is starting a new life in Alberta. Mary finds it more diverse, fun and interesting than she expected. She does escape the cold by visiting her son in Barbados. Cathy White Loubser keeps her sense of joy alive through the foundation that she and her husband founded to support young artists. She says that being around exceptional people opens doors and windows in their lives. Linda Ormrod Brice says “aloha” from Hawaii. She will be in Richmond, Virginia in May, but has no trips planned to Toronto until May 2020. Ann Taylor Collombin and her husband grandparent-hopped at Christmas to visit four families – in Victoria, Salt Spring Island, Fernie and Thornbury. Mary Risley states she gave her last cooking class because she was getting impatient with young people. She still gets food to the hungry in San Francisco. She sends her love to everyone. As we write, Rosemary Elder Dick and her husband are preparing for a visit to Karen Taylor Alvarez in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Ellen Colden Hackett is having a hip replacement. Janet Bell Macey wrote that when in Barbados, she walked into her room and slipped on a wet floor, falling and severely damaging her head, resulting in a basal fracture and blood on the brain. After two weeks to stabilize the bleeding, she was airlifted to Toronto Western Hospital for three months of recuperation and rehabilitation. No driving or drinking for a year! She is now fully recovered, but would like her licence back! Reminder - our big 60th Reunion is in October 2020. Stay tuned for details.

CLASS OF 1961 BURSARY TOTAL AS AT MAY 31, 2019

CLASS REPS: Jill Cumberland Trennum, Susan Ortved Armitage and Elizabeth (Betsy) Bell Perkin The years continue to slip by rapidly as we celebrate milestones in our lives whilst adapting to the challenges of slightly aging bodies. However, our spirit and enthusiasm NEVER age! Continuing with “memories”: Joey Legate and Lynne Cowan Devine clearly remember the

night when John F. Kennedy became president. They tried calling the Oval Office from the old pay phone in Havergal’s basement, billing the charges to Joey’s aunt and uncle, who refused to accept the charges. Not to be deterred, several boarders gathered loose change and tried again! The voice that answered replied, “I’m sorry, but President Kennedy is not available for calls.”
