with a sense of joy and goodwill, knowing they are supporting initiatives that are important to themselves and benefit their community. Research has shown that philanthropy and community involvement can increase levels of happiness and well-being. A study published in the journal Science concluded that participants who spent a portion of their money on charitable organizations reported higher levels of happiness, and the children studied displayed more joy when giving treats to others, rather than receiving treats themselves. 2 These findings suggest that, from a young age, we cultivate more joy and purpose in giving rather than receiving. The connection between wellness and giving is not a new concept and has been recognized by renowned public figures and activists alike. For example, the Dalai Lama’s guiding principle is that one’s own happiness is dependent on the happiness of others. Similarly, Anne Frank noted the richness that giving can add to one’s life, stating: “No one has ever become poor by giving.”
