When Zhang joined the Havergal community in Grade 7, she was excited about the co-curricular opportunities the school offered outside of academics and competitions. Although she was fascinated with STEM-related (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) subjects academically, she was also interested in developing her artistic side. During her six years at Havergal, she was a part of the school’s choirs and bands, and became involved in the Music Connect community partnership, in which students visited a nursing home to entertain the residents with musical performances. She was also Band Co-Head in Grade 12, the Head of the Photography Club in Grade 11, a member of the Debate team and a participant in the Art City community partnership, in which students work with younger peers and local professional artists on shared projects. Zhang is currently studying Architecture at Columbia University in New York. “Architecture has a huge impact on how we navigate the world and our relationships,” she explains. “Being able to design things that can help communities is important; spaces need to be created for the well-being of people.”

An outdoor enthusiast, Newsome’s experiences working at a summer camp and participating in Havergal’s Outdoor Education course in Grade 11 motivated her to pursue a degree in Community Development and Outdoor Recreation at Acadia University. “To me, outdoor recreation is about getting people outside and building communities, which is why I am combining these two specialties,” she explains. “The program is based on building connections with people around the world to help make conditions better.” A community motivator, Newsome spent her high school years leading various groups in roles such as House Captain, Head of the Harry Potter Club, Head of the Book Club and Rowing team Captain. Outside of school, she volunteered in the daycare at Humewood House, a shelter for single moms to gain life skills. In addition to her studies at Acadia, Newsome is also studying part time at Fire Fighters School, with the goal of becoming a volunteer firefighter. “I really like to help in any way I can and make people feel like they belong, which is what informs what I do at camp, at school and in life.”
