Ava El-Ayari | Grade 12 Morning Coffee
I collect mugs. Lots and lots of mugs. Mostly the cheesy, cute, funny ones. Mugs that say ‘Bear with Me’ with a cute bear cub printed under the saying. Or ‘Fluff You!’ with a grumpy, furry cat underneath. To be honest, a cheeky mug will make my entire day. The cheekier the better. A bad mug, however, means my day is over before it starts. In fact, a bad mug makes for a horrendous morning no matter what kind of drink it’s holding. Delicious, creamy, hot chocolate? Doesn’t matter! Hot lemon tea? Don’t get me started! My day is done like dinner. It’s always about the mug. So, if my favorite mugs are all dirty, my day is doomed. Speaking of mugs, lazy Sunday mornings were my family’s favorite time. We would all crawl out of bed at different times and meet each other in my parents’ bed. The first one up would always make them coffee. A splash of cream and one spoon of sugar. Usu ally, it was my little sister because my brothers and I were always the last out of bed. My dad would often ask us to try his coffee. I am pretty sure he was trying to cover up our morning breath with the strong smell of dark roast. He might have also just wanted to see us make our funny faces of disgust. Dads are like that. Dads are also very wise. My dad always told me that, as I grew older, school would get tougher. And he was absolutely right. I used to rely on sugar to get me through that day, but that didn’t work very well as I grew older. Now, I have started to rely on caffeine to keep me awake. This is the secret sauce that gets me through every class, especially the really boring ones. With Starbucks only one block away, it is so easy to get my hands on an easy-to-consume sweet, milky drink with two shots of espresso. This beauty, also known as a Grande Iced White Mocha Latte with vanilla sweet cream cold foam and light ice, is what dreams are made of. The downside is that this sets me back $7.85, which is not easy on my bank account. I guess that this is just the price of higher educa tion. On Sunday mornings nowadays, the first thing that I do after I wake up is head to my kitchen to pour myself a big hot cup of coffee. I will join my parents in the living room where they are drinking their morning coffee from my mugs. I already mentioned how important a good mug is to get my day started off on the right foot, so I don’t need to get into that again. I have always believed that if you can’t beat them, join them. This is why I pour myself some coffee in my favorite mug. Although I am now a coffee lover, someone who enjoys the bitter, acidic liquid with a muddy brown colour, nothing beats a good mug that says, ‘I Will Start Working When My Coffee Does’.
