Reflections of Havergal: 1994-2019

When the Bazaar became a “celebration,” the range of activities and events expanded. The Celebration Saturday program from 2004 provides some sense of the rigorous planning required by an energetic committee comprising students, faculty and staff, Old Girls and parents—planning that starts shortly after the conclusion of each year’s event. Such an undertaking requires prodigious efforts, and the community is to be commended for the heart it brings to this very worthwhile endeavour.

Carol Service

Those who know Havergal know well that there are few things more moving than the sound of an angelic unaccompanied soprano voice singing the first verse of “Once in Royal David’s City” in the hushed dark. That verse always heralds the start of Carol Service, an annual event much loved by the Havergal community.

The Havergal community has many reasons to be grateful to Elisabeth Muir, former head of the Music Department ,who retired in 2001. One very special reason is her role in the creation of the annual Carol Service. Fundraising is one of the key goals of Celebration Day and is never far from the minds of its participants, but that certainly does not mean there can’t be a lot of fun, too, especially when everyone is in sync.

“This is my sixth Celebration Saturday, and one thing has never ceased to amaze me. Sure, the announcement of the final sum of money that we have raised never fails to be a notable event. The ability of some very small Middle School girls to devour multiple cookiegrams is also a feat to be celebrated. But the major role that each and every member of the Havergal community plays in each Celebration Saturday and the

ability of every member to step up to their respective task without a moment’s hesitation is a testament to our dedication to this worthy cause. Whether it’s flipping burgers at the barbecue, participating in the Old Girls games, eating a donut off a string, bidding on a pair of hockey tickets in the silent auction, or merely attending to support these events, each person contributes to pulling off this event.”
