Celebration Saturday

According to Havergal: Celebrating a Century , [m]ission collections, teas, fund-raising parties, and sales of handicrafts had been held over the years, starting in Miss Knox’s time. But it was not until 1930 that the first full-scale bazaar was held with the type of booth and event that formed the model for the bazaars that followed. Called the Bazaar for Missions and the Chapel Fund, it was held in December. The stalls, scattered throughout the school, were stocked with baby clothes, handicrafts, “boudoir dolls in Havergal colours” … The fish pond and darts games were popular, but the crowds were greatest in the gallery where “moving pictures of Sports Day” enabled every girl to check out her own prowess. And, a tradition in itself, “the Matrics served tea.” Soon themes made their appearances in the tearoom—one of the first a German tea garden with waitresses in peasant costume, a dachshund at the door, and the school orchestra playing rousing German music. 20 Significant changes were made to update the occasion, but of course, its philanthropic goals remained at the forefront. In an article published in the September 2013 edition of BTI , Jessica Munk wrote the following: In 1987, Celebration Day was introduced as a more formal version of the Bazaar, and all of its proceeds went to the United Way. Both the Bazaar and Celebration Day were held at Havergal until 2001, when Celebration Saturday replaced the Bazaar as the annual fundraiser. In that article, she went on to explain another significant change: Around 2008, Havergal started giving the proceeds from the newly named Celebration Saturday to the Triangle of Hope. The Triangle of Hope consist[s] of three schools: Havergal, Derrydown Public School and a NOAH school in South Africa. All the money that Havergal raised

at Celebration Saturday was given to Derrydown and NOAH through the Triangle of Hope. In more recent years, Havergal’s community involvement has expanded, and the school has formed many new partnerships with different schools and after-school programs in Toronto, which are now referred to as our Community Partnerships.
