Symbols “Symbols are the imaginative signposts of life.” —MARGOT ASQUITH

The history of the school since its incarnation as Havergal Ladies College is richly told in Havergal: Celebrating a Century . However, that history is also writ small in the school’s symbols, in its crests and mottos, in its hymns and songs and cheers and, of course, in its mascot. Some of the symbols have changed over the years, but the values at the heart of the school have not. Whether serious, like the motto, or playful, like the mascot, each symbol reflects the spirit of Havergal. The school is known for its aspirations and accomplishments, as was the woman for whom it is named. Frances Ridley Havergal, born in 1836 in Worcestershire, England, was lauded for her religious devotion and for her gifts as a poet and composer of hymns, though she also wrote religious tracts and works for children. She was only 42 when she died in 1879, but her talents were evident in the many works that are her legacy.
