Reflections of Havergal: 1994-2019
Ken Crossley, Director of Facilities, a plan that was impressive for its scope and detail. Its goals had far-reaching implications with respect to: 1. resource use: electricity, water, natural gas and waste management 2. the building systems: heating and cooling, environmental systems and lighting 3. the building envelope: windows and doors, roofing and flashings, cleaning and building, and grounds maintenance (including kitchen waste). Progress in recent years has been steady and sure. In 2014, Lisa Massie, the Director of Facilities, made a presentation in Prayers that showcased important changes in and to the physical plant. Since 2014, there have been many developments to support the school’s efforts and even more are anticipated as the Limitless master plan unfolds. Albert Einstein once said, “We still do not know one thousandth of one per cent of what nature has revealed to us.” It is safe to say that we know more than we did when Einstein made that statement, though, of course, much is still a mystery. What we do know for certain, however, is that deep satisfaction and joy come with tending the garden that is Havergal. Sustainability at Havergal Lisa Massie, Director of Facilities

In spring 2017, an important new student leadership position was created: Sustainability Prefect. A key figure in the movement toward greater sustainability was Barb Macintosh, who played many roles in the school during her tenure: geography teacher and then head of the Social Sciences Department, house head, advisee to the Environment Club and ultimately, Director of Student Life. One particularly significant contribution she made to the environmental movement at the school was the sustainability plan she developed in 2008 with
