The campaign was designed to support the construction of a new athletic facility estimated to cost $12 million. It was a formidable undertaking, but it succeeded: the school’s athletic facility is a source of deep pride in the Havergal community. The opening ceremony for the Athletic Centre took place, appropriately, on Celebration Day on September 30, 2006, and it was a proud day for the Havergal community because the centre is dazzling. No doubt visitors to the school’s website are equally impressed: Opened in the fall of 2006, this 50,000 sq. ft. centre provides exceptional athletic facilities, spacious gathering areas as well as classroom and office space. The regulation-size pool (25 metres, with state-of-the-art timing system), double gym, single gym with a climbing wall, fitness room, change rooms, and associated facilities make this an unparalleled facility.

The facts can’t be disputed: Havergal has come a very long way since its first “swimming bath”! The Swimming Bath ’Twas on a February night, When first it gleamed upon my sight, A dark, delicious, living pool

Belonging to our own dear school. Our guests admired it lying there; They wondered where the mermaids were; ‘Twas all was needed for a snare To entice them in and keep them there. We could not move and so we stayed, Fascinated by the shade. — Ludemus , 1907

Yet, despite all the profound changes to the campus, two places in the Upper School look very much as they did in the late 1920s. The assembly hall (now called Brenda Robson Hall) and the Ellen Knox Library retain their grace and dignity, reflecting Havergal’s many rich traditions.
