Reflections of Havergal: 1994-2019

The entrance to the new Lower School, 1999.

In September 1999, Havergal students, faculty, staff and parents thrilled to the glorious new Junior School building, named after Margaret Norris McCain 1951. As the campaign brochure stated: From the entry driveway the message is clear: this is a special place. The stone clock tower, with its carved school crest, will become a landmark, identifying the school and making a dramatic statement at its main entrance. The choice of stone creates a sense of permanence and echoes the original Havergal College building. The new Resource Centre is centrally located in the Lower School, and all paths lead to it. To encourage outdoor activity on warm-weather days, the Resource Centre has a series of doors that open toward the ravine. To provide for security and supervision, the Lower School has three separate entries and locker areas: for JK/ SK, for Grades 1, 2, and 3, for Grades 4, 5, and 6. Both Kindergarten rooms have outside access, allowing parents to pick up students directly.

Program classrooms are functionally located for proximity to the form rooms. For example, the Music Room is located at the main level next to the gym and stage, and easily accessible to students K-3. Rooms for Art, French, and Sciences are located on the upper level, along with Grades 4-6. Each pair of classrooms has a moveable partition to facilitate the combining of classes for increased teaching flexibility. Shared, alcove-like breakout rooms accommodate small group and individual activities and can also be used as areas for rest and contemplation. Glazed walls between classrooms and breakout rooms allow teachers to monitor and supervise students. The multi-purpose room will function both as a gymnasium and a lunch room and can accommodate two programs simultaneously.
