faculty as it nurtured the whole girl. She noted with pride that “[o]ne of the overarching objectives of the plan is to honour teachers for the competitive advantage they offer to Havergal and its students. Through their outstanding work, our faculty enables students to achieve their full intellectual, creative, physical and spiritual potential” ( Torch , Fall 2009). Writing for the Chronicle in 2012, Dr. Groesbeck showed that she also understood the power of mentorship in the school: I wonder how many of our readers have had a mentor in their lives. Someone who helped them to make an important decision. Someone whose opinion they trust and respect. Perhaps this person is a parent, a teacher, a friend or a professional colleague. I suspect that most of you have enjoyed this kind of relationship with someone special at some time or another, or perhaps you have guided another person along her life’s journey. Whatever your personal experience with mentoring, I think that Havergal’s mission—‘making a difference’—inspires us to be mentors, providing support and guidance wherever we can. When interviewed for the Spring 2013 Torch just prior to her departure from Havergal, Dr. Groesbeck was asked which of her accomplishments had given her the greatest satisfaction: I have had the privilege to work with three outstanding Board Chairs—Alan Hibben, Eden Oliver 1978 and Ann Kerwin—who have each given so much to the school. I am proud of the school’s Administrative Board—we have come a long way together to build a strong leadership team …The school’s curriculum was brilliantly developed before I arrived, and I admire the academic and professional development programs. I have worked particularly hard to have Havergal’s name recognized internationally. I have travelled to Old Girls reunions around the world to make those relationships

Dr. Susan R. Groesbeck, Havergal’s 10th principal.
