The Race Bluestocking, 1994 By Kara Kennedy, Grade 10

Pressure. the pushing of coiled spring waiting to be released. Blood pulses through me like a rapid. A familiar ring from my cox gives last advice to the crew. My stomach whirls like a tornado…’til… The gun blasts! The race begins! My boat gains a steady rhythm, but my muscles kill with strain. My eighth boat exceeds other lanes. My breath increases pace like a steam train starting from the station. A hammer pounds in my chest. As the end draws near, the pain is blocked out with visions of gold and sweet sounds. The spring is released, my goal is reached! Cheers cry through the air and my eyes fill with tears.
