Co-Curriculars at Havergal: There’s More to Them Than You Think BTI , December 2011 By Molly Harris
At Havergal, we all strive for balance. We all want to get good grades, be on sports teams, create art and maintain a social life. Managing to pull off any combination of the above is what apparently gives us the much-coveted status of being “well¬ rounded.” Even the word “balance” is pleasant: no overwhelming ratio of vowels to consonants, not too short, and not too long. It is interesting that this pleasing word describes the precarious equilibrium high school students must manage every day. We’re incredibly fortunate to have a huge number of clubs, teams and areas for community involvement at school. Whether you’re a member of the ping-pong club or you volunteer at a homework club on Wednesdays, there’s an opportunity for every girl at Havergal to get involved. Unfortunately, I never fully immersed myself in Havergal’s co-curricular life; until now, that is. As a Middle School student, I reluctantly joined clubs because they were mandatory (although I never really enjoyed them), and this less-than-perfect experience is probably what caused me to stay well clear of Club Fest in Grade 9. However, I joined the rowing team later that year
and found out that I actually loved being on a team and busying myself with an activity that I genuinely enjoyed. So, when Club Fest rolled around this year, I instantly jumped right into as much as I could, joining the BTI , Athletes in Motion and Grenoble Homework Club. This is a pretty full plate, but I’m not ashamed to say that I was keen to do as much as I could this year so I could figure out what I really love and want to pursue in the long run. Being a member of so many different organizations doesn’t set me back in my school or social life at all. Being this busy has actually taught me how to better organize my time, which makes the whole balancing act a lot easier. I know that since I have commitments, I need to plan my study time and academic work around them. I find this the hidden beauty of all the opportunities offered at Havergal: not only do they give us chances to experience and find things that we love, but they teach us how to manage the different aspects of our lives. Being involved at Havergal is truly a benefit, and all of us are lucky to have these opportunities. I encourage each one of you to find ways to be active in this incredible community.
