What’s on the Agenda? BTI , June 2006 By Katharine Brickman, Assistant Editor, Grade 11
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition of an agenda is “a list of things to be done”. It is true that here at Havergal, our student agendas are a place where we can write up whatever homework we are assigned each day. However, Havergal girls’ agendas have taken on a life of their own. Not only are they the perfect place for HC girls to keep themselves organized (assignment due dates, tests, sports games, etc.), they serve as a creative outlet for many of us. A frequently asked question at Havergal seems to be “May I see your agenda?” Now, if one were talking about an ordinary agenda, this question would seem odd, and perhaps even intrusive. However, when referring to an HC girl’s agenda, this is perfectly natural. And, when the agenda in question is opened, one might learn something about the agenda’s owner, because it is so personalized. One might learn what classes someone is taking, what sports and activities she participate in, what social events she plans on attending, and of course, when all of her friends‘ birthdays are and how old they are turning. Plus, one might peruse the dozens of pictures of friends, family, and favourite celebrities gracing the cover and front pages. Havergal agendas, clean and new in September (when they are presented with the registration packages), are steadily transformed over the course of the year, so that by the time June rolls around, they are like works of art, each one unique to its owner’s interests and artistic capabilities.
The school year has drawn to a close. Not long ago, we were asked to write our year’s reflections on a TA Tuesday. Many of us, of course, were plagued with the writer’s block that suddenly overtakes us when asked to reflect under pressure. So, next year, try looking through your agenda, starting at the beginning of the year and moving forward, replaying the school year in your mind. You’ll find that your agenda is like a personal scrapbook of the year. Going through it will undoubtedly spark memories of impacting events that should make writing your yearend reflection a piece of cake!
