Black Tights Havergal: Celebrating A Century , p. 146 By Nicole Le Riche, 1967

“While a number of people just leave runs be, or ladders them further in moments of stress or boredom, others try to mend them either with thread, or failing that, safety pins. The safety pin method of mending seems to be favoured by boarders. It’s really quite a feat to gather up all the hole with one safety pin. Yet another, though not very popular, way to repair the gaps is to fill them in with black ink. it works quite well until one has to change for games, when, on removing one’s tights one’s legs look as if they had been viciously attacked by some malignant black fungus.”
