The Lisa Hardie Woodland Torch , Winter 1997

The Lisa Hardie Woodland is one of the prettiest spots on campus. Initiated by Mrs. Nel Hardie in honour of her daughter, Lisa, Mrs. Hardie spends endless hours on the trail, ensuring the creation of a wonderful environment. Thanks also go to the grounds staff for their care with this area. Students have an opportunity to learn more about the trail and the environment from Mrs. Hardie in the Grade 10 phys. ed. classes, during the outdoor education unit. Student Caleigh Pacini experienced the Lisa Hardie Woodland firsthand, and shares these reflections: We discussed the soil and its importance for keeping things alive—it tied in with two of my other course, biology and geography, and I was able to share some of my knowledge in the class discussion. Mrs. Hardie taught the class in a way that kept me interested, using articles, pictures, and examples from everyday life. We went on a small tour of the woodlands. Everything seemed so quiet, perfect for getting away for a while and enjoying nature. We cleared sticks out of the flower bed, created compost heaps, and covered the flower beds with compost. Although some people weren’t too impressed about the fact that they had to deal with worms and bugs, we were able to make it fun.
