Reflections of Havergal: 1994-2019
accomplishments and all the rites of passage that take us through this life. As far back as the earliest issues, the Chronicle contained stories of women taking on ambitious challenges, in leadership positions, doing important and life-saving work around the world or succeeding as writers, painters, musicians—even in those long-ago days when a woman’s work was expected to be in the home. Here are some sample articles from the Chronicle between the years of 1994 to 2015:
“New Dr. Susan J. Ditchburn Young Alumna Award Presented to Lola Kassim 2000” Chronicle , 2008
“Changing Lives, One Connection at a Time” Chronicle, 2012
The magazine also resounds with well-considered and often courageous opinion pieces that provoke thought and encourage action. A look at some of the Chronicle ’s artfully designed covers tells us one thing in particular: you can judge a book by its cover, when both cover and content reflect the inquiring minds that created them. The Old Girls awards reflect the school’s core values of integrity, inquiry, courage and compassion. In addition to prizes awarded annually to current students, the Old Girls celebrate the achievements of their members with the following: • The Havergal Old Girls Life Achievement Award was created in 1989. The award is to be presented to an Old Girl to recognize her life’s achievement, professional and/or volunteer. The award is presented annually at the Old Girls Annual Dinner and may only be awarded once to a particular Old Girl. The nominations for this award are retained in the Old Girls office for a period of five years. • The Hall of Distinction Award was first given in 1994. Given every five years, this award recognizes Old Girls who have achieved singular, noteworthy accomplishments. • The Susan Ditchburn Young Alumna Award is named in honour of Havergal’s ninth principal. This award is presented to an Old Girl, under 40 years of age, who has made a difference for good in the world. The award is presented each year to one Old Girl at the Old Girls Annual Dinner. The nominations for this award are retained in the Old Girls office for a period of five years.

Chronicle covers The Chronicle is, I believe, an integral part of the reason that the Havergal Old Girls community has remained so strong for more than a century. It was the “social media” of yesteryear, allowing Old Girls to stay connected both with each other and with our school by reading about the life events of classmates and other Old Girls, as well as about what is happening each year at Havergal. —Helen-kay Davy, Chronicle , 1994
