Reflections of Havergal: 1994-2019

Havergal Community “We are a community that moves with one purpose in all its constituencies, which is to further the education of the young.” —DR. PRISCILLA WINN BARLOW, TORCH , FALL 1993

Havergal Parents

Havergal’s founding fathers were indeed fathers who were eager to secure the best possible education for their daughters, and the deep sense of responsibility that informed their efforts ensured the success of the fledgling school. However, for much of the school’s first century, most parents played only a small role in the vibrant life of the college. Such was the culture of the times that they were largely content with, of course, good reason to entrust the education of their girls to the principal and her staff; though, as Havergal: Celebrating a Century 33 notes, one anxious mother in the early years did say “she could never rest till she knew that her only girl was sleeping always in the principal’s room.” By the 1970s, however, parents were showing themselves eager to take part in school life, and February 1972 saw the creation of the Havergal College Forum, a meeting at which parents were invited to ask questions of the assembled panel. In attendance at that first gathering were 550 people whose queries and comments provoked wide-ranging and thoughtful discussions.

Caring for the woodlands

As Havergal prepared to move into its second century, the words of Dr. Winn Barlow spoke to the past and to the future. Parents and Old Girls enthusiastically support the mission of the school. They provide valuable perspectives and bring special skills and a profound commitment to the fostering of Havergal students. Stewards of the Havergal tree, parents and alumnae sustain and refresh it through their exemplary volunteer efforts.
