WELLNESS
for what we feel: feelings happen. However, we must be responsible for the way we act as a result of those feelings … It’s the bad feelings that make us want to be free of the responsibility for the way we act. It’s feelings such as jealousy, anger and greed that make us want to blame others and to strike out physically or in other ways. If we are sensitive and responsible, we will feel, take ownership of those feelings and act responsibly even though we are feeling them. The program run by the Physical Education and Health department has, of course, always reflected the school’s concern with student wellness. In its courses, students not only develop their skills in a wide range of sports and lifelong leisure activities, but they also benefit from what they learn in Health classes, as underscored in “Wellness and Education,” previously cited: Much of the discussion in Phys Ed health classes revolves around healthy lifestyle choice and the importance of balance between body, mind and spirit. Some units deal with nutrition and regular exercise while others look at the negative impact of drugs, alcohol and smoking on a person’s health. The curriculum is geared towards providing the knowledge and motivation that students need to make good choices. It is important to stress, however, that wellness is the domain of every member of the administration, faculty and staff, and they all take very seriously their responsibility to help students thrive in a safe and secure environment.
Guidance Services
Teacher counsellors provide a range of invaluable services, from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12. The department’s activities were summarized in “Career Cruising with the Guidance Department” in the Spring 2011 Torch : The Guidance Department offers a multitude of student services including social-emotional, academic and university counselling. This is accomplished through continued monitoring, regular one-on-one meetings, grade group meetings and special events. All of this contact is essential for a comprehensive and effective guidance program. Guidance counsellors also teach the curriculum for the mandatory Grade 10 Career Studies course.

Wellness and Education Torch , Fall 2001
“In today’s fast-paced world, where much of life is scheduled and exercise is often squeezed in if we have time, the ability to achieve a balanced lifestyle that suits each of us as individuals is critical. Often, a healthy lifestyle is something we must learn … through education and practice.”
