BOARDING

Soon after came a midnight banana supper in a girl’s room, memorable because, not knowing what to do with the skins, an adventurous spirit suggested throwing them out the window, totally forgetting that there was a tree opposite, and we woke next morning to a glorious Christmas tree, lit up by the frost and snow, with yellow banners frozen to the boughs and yellow gifts on the ground beneath in every direction.

One year before the start of the First World War, her experiences had led Miss Knox to conclude the following in her letter in the 1913 Ludemus : Life at Boarding School is, after all, practically life on board a training ship; not a financial speculation, whatever people may say, so many dollars down, so many lumps of other people’s thoughts swallowed in return; but, if it is worth anything, a practising ground where mentally, morally, spiritually, every girl is coming to her best, seeing the vision of the might be … And it is clear from the Boarders’ daily routines and from their “Bedroom Rules” that the training ship was a tight ship:

There were, of course, the inevitable infractions of those rules, as this account in the 1914 Ludemus revealed:
