CO-CURRICULUM

students: self-confidence, sportsmanship, commitment, perseverance, co-operation, responsibility, resilience, self- efficacy, and pride in representing the school. The values set out in the philosophy are well supported by a wide range of opportunities for students that are tailored to their stage of development. In addition to physical education and health courses in the Junior and Upper Schools, Havergal offers an impressively long list of cocurricular opportunities that includes cricket and cross-country for students in Grades 1 to 3 and snowboarding and Ultimate Frisbee for Senior School students. Their performance on courts and fields and rinks and on and in the water continues to impress. As the school’s website explains: [t]here are three distinct programs including Squads, Squad Teams and Havergal Teams … Squads: Squads are available to students in Grades 1–3. This non-competitive athletics program is focused on developing the FUNdamentals of sport. Squad Teams: Squad Teams are available to students in Grades 4–6. Girls in this program begin training according to more formalized methods with an emphasis on sports skills. Squad Teams focus on the sports that the Junior School participates in [as a member of the] Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association (CISAA) while providing additional development and preparation for Havergal Teams. Havergal Teams: Havergal Teams are available to students in Grades 5–12*. Our teams compete in CISAA. Senior school teams may qualify for the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA) championships. Havergal College fields more than 75 teams over the school year. *Grade 4 students have the opportunity to participate on both the Cross-Country, and Track and Field teams. The school’s website makes clear that the ambitious athletics program is supported by superb facilities:

The motto of the Olympics, Faster, higher, stronger also appears to have meaning for students participating in the athletics program. Perhaps the most dramatic developments in sport at Havergal can be seen in the programs for rowing and ice hockey in the Upper School and track and field in the Junior.

Hockey

As the 1904 Ludemus photo below reveals, hockey has been a part of the athletics program at Havergal from the start; although, the uniforms have clearly changed. Given the “fatalities” listed in the 1900 Ludemus , however, the level of determination is the same:
