in the future more people in the GTA will know about the arts at Havergal College. And there are new programs that are using music as a vehicle for social change, such as community partnerships that have the girls going to seniors’ homes, hospitals and rehab facilities to perform and engage the people there.” Over the years, the school has also been treated to memorable performances by the staff band. As Lynn Janes so succinctly put it when interviewed for that Spring 2017 Torch article, “Our ultimate goal is to instill a lifelong love of music in our students.” From the sounds of the music made by Havergal students across the grades, that enthusiasm will not be quick to wane.

Christmas Carolling Torch , Spring 2013 “One night this past December, I heard the faint singing of ‘Silent Night’ off in the distance. Then, I realized the music was coming from outside, and the singing was in German. I knew it had to be Havergal students who had learned the song for our Carol Service. I went to my front door, and to my sheer delight, a group of Havergal Grads—bundled up and all donned with Santa hats—were carolling in front of the Residence! My husband and I were so charmed that the group had come to our home to serenade us. We invited them in—their dog and all!—and we enjoyed some Christmas cookies together. It was a wonderful evening, and I will remember it always.” —Principal Sue Groesbeck

In the 1997 edition of Kneesocks , Amanda Cullen asked this important question: Does the music filter through the tress of a forest? Does it carry to the sea? Oh please tell me, where does the music go? Does it penetrate the depth of the sea, so the whales and dolphins can hear it? Do the mermaids reply, but we just can’t hear? Oh please tell me, where does the music go? Does it travel on the wings of the fast flying bird through the sheets of heaven so the angels can hear? Oh please tell me, where does the music go? If it is strong, does it carry across the sea? If it is weak does it filter away? Oh please tell me, where does the music go? Do we all hear the music? Or just a few with open ears? Oh please tell me, where does the music go? Given all that we know of music at Havergal, the answer to her question appears to be—“Everywhere!”
