Reflections of Havergal: 1994-2019

Drama

Havergal has long supported the dramatic arts. Teachers in the Junior School and Upper School make use of drama techniques in their courses, and the co-curricular drama program at Havergal offers opportunities for personal development through rehearsal and performance. Junior School students find those opportunities in the very popular Drama Club, and Upper School students participate in months-long projects culminating in enthusiastically received performances. Middle School Productions The Havergal Youth Theatre was created in 1991 by Larry Tayler, who each year until 2012 captivated audiences with inventive and charming productions. Some were delightful for their whimsy, while others addressed, head-on, difficult issues such as the death of a young girl from leukemia in 2003 ( Zink: The Myth, The Legend, The Zebra by Cherie Bennett), and in 2007, the horror of the Holocaust ( I Never Saw Another Butterfly by Celeste Raspanti). Whatever the starting point, whether high drama or light comedy, each production touched the hearts and minds of its Havergal audiences and special guests from elementary schools such as Derrydown Public School and John Ross Robertson Junior Public School. In the years since Mr. Tayler’s retirement, that tradition has continued, with equally impressive productions such as Munsch at Play by Irene N. pieces were the product of group collaboration, with members deciding on a theme and creating routines that reflected that theme. The largely improvisational nature of the process created significant informal leadership opportunities. The 2016–17 school year saw the creation of the Dance Team, whose members compete in such competitions as Bedazzled , an annual Canadian dance competition for young people.
