Co-Curriculum “Being involved at Havergal is truly a benefit, and all of us are lucky to have these opportunities ” —MOLLY HARRIS, BTI , DECEMBER 2011

• contribute to school life and beyond through sharing personal interests and abilities; and • develop leadership skills such as organization [of] people and activities, motivation, mediation, management and inspiration regarding the actions and interactions of others. That students who take advantage of these opportunities come to appreciate their value is clear from the article, written by Molly Harris for the December 2011 issue of BTI : Havergal takes its commitment to the co-curriculum to heart. The comprehensive program encourages and supports student learning outside the classroom through meaningful community engagement, membership in clubs responsive to students’ interests and participation in arts and athletics activities—the very definition of serious fun.

The years since 1994 have seen an important development with respect to the language used to describe the Havergal program. For many years, the term “extracurricular” was used to describe school activities beyond the scope of the classroom. However, Havergal now refers to such offerings as “co-curricular” because the term underscores the value of the activities in and of themselves and the school’s efforts to make students’ experience of the program seamless. Havergal’s 2013 report to CAIS stated that the goal of the school’s co-curriculum is to provide opportunities for all students to engage in school life and outside of school in ways that complement and enrich the curricular programs. This form of engagement in the life of the school [provides] students, faculty and staff with opportunities to: • discover their interests and abilities in different ways; • interact with one another outside the classroom; • get to know students in different grades; • develop new skills; • build understanding about other people and places;
