Havergal College & The Havergal College Foundation Impact Report 2019-20

Campaign Donor Story: Chris Pfaff & Carolyn Quinn Pfaff With their generous gift to the Limitless Campaign , Chris Pfaff and Carolyn Quinn Pfaff have made a major contribution to the sustainability of Havergal. They will give their names to the Upper School’s new parking lot—a natural choice, as Chris is President and CEO of Pfaff Automotive Partners, one of Canada’s leading luxury car dealers—along with Havergal’s first electric car-charging station, one of the many green features of the new LEED® Gold – certified building renovations. More importantly, they say their donation is an expression of gratitude to what the school has done for their daughter, and a desire to keep the College at the forefront of women’s education. Quinn Pfaff, age 7, was very excited to start Grade 2 this fall, according to her parents. “I have watched her grow from a shy three-year-old to a vibrant, eager little girl who skips into school every morning,” says Carolyn, executive director of Toronto Fashion Week. “I’m surprised on an ongoing basis by how much she knows and what she’s learning about.”

“I can’t say enough about how much she’s grown and developed,” says Chris, who sits on the Board of Directors for Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket, Ont. “She has made so many friends, developed new interests and has really been encouraged by her teachers to be inquisitive.” Amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ability for Quinn to partake in continuous learning at home has given the family a deeper appreciation for the school environment and its faculty. With the help of Quinn’s teachers, they were able to keep her progressing with core math and literacy learning, despite the lack of traditional in-class interaction. “We have so much respect and admiration for our teachers, even more than before,” Carolyn says. “They are excellent in their field and exceptional mentors. Talking to our friends at other schools has made me realize how lucky we are at Havergal.” The family says they chose the school for Quinn, who started in Junior Kindergarten, based on the recommendation of a family friend — a Havergal Old Girl — who went on to have a successful career in the business world. “She told me that every single day of her career, she has thought about how thankful she was for having gone to Havergal,” says Carolyn. “The confidence she has, coupled with the education she received, were incomparable and valuable contributors to her success in business.” Contributing to the Limitless Campaign , the couple says, will ensure other girls continue to receive the same benefits to last a lifetime. “It was an easy decision to invest in the school,” says Carolyn. “We wanted to help ensure Havergal continues to be a leader in girls’ education and prepares students with the best possible foundations for their future careers.” The family also hopes that the electric car-charging station will encourage more families to invest in the future of our planet, as well as their child’s education. “Many Havergal families are also some of my customers,” says Chris. “I want to educate consumers on the benefits of owning an electric vehicle, for example, lower maintenance costs. We estimate we’re going to be seeing a lot more of these vehicles in the next few years.”
