Would you like to learn how to see the invisible? If I could give you a magic word—or words—would you have the courage and strength to accept them? Interested? You don’t need to go to Hogwarts to obtain these superpowers: they are available right here at Havergal. Just sign up for Latin. If you don’t believe me, then flip open any English dictionary at random and you will discover that about half the words on the page are from Latin. If you just look at words over two syllables long, you will find that 90% of them come from Latin. Study Latin and discover an almost unimaginable word power. It’s magical. Now, take a moment and look around the room. Chances are you will see other Havergal students like yourself along with (perhaps) tables and chairs and other ordinary objects. Now, look again and take a moment to consider what you don’t see—at least not with your eyes. Right there in front of you is a whole invisible world that enables you to make sense of what you are seeing. What you see with your eyes are chairs. What you don’t see with your eyes is that invisible something that enables you to say, ‘Hey, that thing there is a chair.’ It’s the invisible forms that make things make sense. Does that sound strange? Then, study Latin and learn how to see the invisible forms that shape the way you perceive the world around you. Finally, study Latin today and discover how to connect immediately with persons from the past—discover their hopes and fears, their dreams and desires, their loves and losses. Mandarin

GRADES 9 to 12 LKBBD – International Languages, Level 1 Simplified Chinese, Academic 1 CREDIT “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Chinese is a language that stems from pictures and there is no conjugation at all! Learning Mandarin with its 5,000 years of history and culture is an adventurous journey. It reflects individual personalities and refines one’s self-value through the study of philosophical poems and idioms. This course is designed to emphasize the development of Mandarin oral communication, reading and writing skills to enable you to communicate with native speakers. During the first year’s study, you will fully grasp pronunciation skills and gradually build 250 to 300 Chinese characters. You will be able to use key sentences to communicate numbers, dates and time, family members and personal information, countries and languages, occupations and modes of transportation. You will start to explore Chinese culture, including social customs and the arts, by participating in cultural events and activities involving both in and out of school studies and excursions. There are no prerequisites for this course.
