Havergal's Uncalendar, 2021-22 Academic Year

GRADE 10 FSF2D – Core French, Grade 10, Academic 1 CREDIT The Grade 10 French course invites you to explore many different facets of the Francophone world, through such themes as childhood memories, social justice, health promoting strategies, and searching for volunteers. Basically, you will find out what it means to be a Francophone. You will spend a lot of time telling, listening, reading and watching stories since it’s the best way to gain a better appreciation of other people. As the French novelist Marcel Proust said: “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” And so, you will see things differently through conversations about your discoveries and through improvisations where thinking on your feet and putting yourself into someone else’s shoes are the name of the game. This course also deepens the skills you learned in Grade 9 French so that you can speak and write more like a native speaker. By the end of the course, you will be able to describe your own childhood stories, navigate your way through Francophone menus, cuisines, and traditional festivals, imagine and describe your dream home, use French teens’ lingo in conversation and, like Dr. Phil, help other people solve their problems. Along the way, you will read short stories, magazine articles and two novels meeting such interesting characters as Nicolas and his gang of endearingly mischievous friends, the timeless and heart wrenching characters of Victor Hugo’s Les misérables , enigmatic Petit Prince and a teenaged psychologist named Ariane who has a few issues of her own to solve. Prerequisite: FSF1D – Core French, Grade 9, Academic or FSF1P – Core French, Grade 9, Applied

GRADE 11 FSF3U – Core French, Grade 11, University Preparation 1 CREDIT This is the year that tout est possible with your French skills! You will build on your repertoire of language tools and use them to communicate in more sophisticated and natural ways on a wide range of topics. Get ready to create and share an engaging travel blog to a francophone destination you have always wanted to explore. Learn from guest artists how to find your voice on a topic close to your heart using informal, descriptive and playful French in your own spoken-word piece also known as le slam . Challenge your comprehension by reading an independent novel of your choice. Collaborate with others on an environmental action plan and see what francophone countries around the world are doing to save our planet. Step into the shoes of a young quebecois woman and navigate her personal decisions and the future of Quebec in a classic 1960s quebecois play. With all your experience and skill en français you can help others with their French too. To cap off the course, imagine creating a short Youtube-style video for younger learners with helpful tips about speaking French. Prerequisite: FSF2D – Core French, Grade 10, Academic
