INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES

Students may take a maximum of three interdisciplinary studies courses—one each of Interdisciplinary Studies, Grade 11, Open (IDC3O); Interdisciplinary Studies, Grade 12, University Preparation (IDC4U); and Interdisciplinary Studies, Grade 12, Open (IDC4O). AP CAPSTONE DIPLOMA PROGRAM HSB4UP – AP Seminar and IDC4UP – AP Research AP Capstone is a diploma program based on two AP Courses: AP Seminar and AP Research. Both are year-long courses that focus on developing critical thinking, research, collaboration, analysis, evidence-based arguments, writing, time management and presentation skills. They support and further develop the skills taught in our liberal arts program. In AP Seminar, students investigate real-world issues from multiple perspectives, gathering and analyzing information from various sources in order to develop credible and valid evidence based arguments. In AP Research, students cultivate the skills and discipline necessary to conduct independent research in order to produce and defend a scholarly academic paper. Students typically take AP Seminar in Grade 11, followed by AP Research in Grade 12. The AP Seminar is a prerequisite for AP Research. In both courses, students investigate a variety of topics in multiple disciplines and may choose to explore topics related to other courses they’re taking.

Both courses guide students through completing a research project, writing an academic paper and making a presentation on their project. Over the course of the two-year program, students are required to: • analyze topics through multiple lenses to construct meaning or gain understanding; • plan and conduct a study or investigation; • propose solutions to real-world problems; • plan and produce communication in various forms; • collaborate to solve a problem; and • integrate, synthesize and make cross-curricular connections. If you earn scores of 3 or higher in the AP Seminar and the AP Research courses and also score 3 or higher on four additional AP Exams of your choice, you’ll receive the AP Capstone Diploma. If you earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research, you’ll receive the AP Seminar and Research Certificate. The HSB4U and IDC4U courses are both 1 credit courses that count towards your Ontario Secondary School Diploma
