Havergal's Uncalendar, 2021-22 Academic Year

ASM2O – Media Arts, Grade 10, Open 1 CREDIT Are you curious about how and why artists used photography to explore ideas? Do you wonder how digital tools can enhance your creative process? The Media Arts course explores how digital photography, computer apps, photo apps, photo and video editing software can foster a collaborative, cross-disciplinary approach to artistic expression. Creative projects to support the Ludemus Yearbook Club will be included. We won’t just learn how to take photographs—we will approach digital tools as artists, considering aesthetics, content and meaning as much as the technical aspects. GRADE 11 AVI3M – Visual Arts, Grade 11, University/ College Preparation 1 CREDIT Would you like to develop your drawing and painting skills? Have you ever wondered how artists whose work you admire make things look so life-like? Have you said out loud or to yourself: “I could never do that”? If you’ve ever uttered any of those words or thought any of those thoughts, then this course is a perfect fit for you! In this course you will have the opportunity to explore a range of 2D and 3D materials and methods, with an emphasis on representational drawing, oil painting, printmaking and clay. You will focus on observational drawing and study the drawing and painting techniques of master artists. You will learn to paint in oil on canvas moving from black and white work to full colour paintings and you will have the opportunity to work with a visiting artist to learn modern intaglio methods, creating a small series of unique prints. This course will also include an exciting art excursion to a local or not-so-local destination. As the year progresses, you will assemble a portfolio of your strongest work and we will collaborate to analyze your strengths and identify areas in need of improvement. We are confident you will leave this course ready for your Senior Year in Grade 12 Art, prepared to express your visual ideas and share your art with the community. Prerequisite: AVI1O – Visual Arts, Grade 9, Open or AVI2O – Visual Arts, Grade 10, Open Note: This course focuses on studio activities in one or more of the visual arts.

ASM3M – Media Arts, Grade 11, University/ College Preparation 1 CREDIT This course continues and builds on learning in ASM2O (Media Arts, Gr. 10), extending your knowledge and skills in photography, digital media, yearbook layout and design, and video editing. The intersection of digital and traditional media is central to this course. Prerequisite: ASM2O - Media Arts, Grade 10 Open GRADE 12 AVI4M – Visual Arts, Grade 12, University/ College Preparation 1 CREDIT Grade 12 Art will provide you with the opportunity to consolidate your learning experiences in the Havergal Art Program. In this culminating year, with the support of your teachers, you will create a body of artwork that will be shared with the HC community at the Senior Art Exhibition in May. You will begin by developing a proposal that will guide your research and artistic production throughout the year. This proposal will outline your choice of theme and media as it provides a focus for the creation of a number of related works of art. Regular check-in meetings and critiques with teachers and peers will provide ongoing feedback. These meetings will help you to move forward with confidence and stay open to new ideas throughout the year. The course will emphasize the creative process, helping you realize your visual ideas and potential as an artist. Your year will culminate with the creation of a complex, large scale self- portrait that will be included in your Senior Art Exhibition. For those of you considering post-secondary studies in some area of the visual arts (i.e., design, photography, architecture, art history, animation, fashion design, etc.), this course will help you to create your application portfolio. Prerequisite: AVI3M – Visual Arts, Grade 11, University/College Preparation or ASM3M – Media Arts, Grade 11, University/ College Preparation
