Havergal's Uncalendar, 2017-18 Academic Year

GRADE 11 AND 12 PPL3O/PPL4O – Healthy Active Living Education, Grade 11 or 12, Open 1 CREDIT You are a busy student preparing for postsecondary education. These courses are the “traditional” Health and Physical Education courses and can help you to manage your stress and make time to be active during your school day. Students will choose what they want to do from a variety of units and also provide input as to the activities they would like to do in each unit. This course also includes a trip to Sunnybrook Hospital and Lyndhurst Rehab Centre to participate in the P.A.R.T.Y. program (Prevent Alcohol and Related Trauma in Youth). The emphasis in this course is on participation, communication, teamwork, effort, learning healthy habits and how important it is to maintain lifelong fitness. Health units allow students to connect their experiences to making good choices about healthy eating, mental well- being and sexual health. PAD3O – Outdoor Education, Grade 11, Open 1 CREDIT You don’t need to be an experienced tripper, know how to cross-country ski or even know how to scale a rock wall to be in the Outdoor Education course. You learn a lot of hard skills like tying knots and centre flipping a canoe along with soft skills such as listening and creative problem solving through initiative games. You will go on three trips: a canoe trip in September to Algonquin Park; winter camping at Kandalore in January; and a trip to Wahanowin doing all the rock climbing and ropes courses and trapeze in May. On these trips, you will live in tents, cabins and will even build and sleep in a quinzee (like an igloo), which actually is a lot warmer than it sounds. The menu is chosen and created by you so you know that it will always be good. In between preparing for the trips you will have a short health unit. You will gain many close friends throughout the classes and the trips. You will have unforgettable experiences and challenge yourself mentally and physically. Health units allow students to connect their experiences in Grade 11 to making good choices about healthy eating, mental well-being and sexual health. The world is our classroom; let’s take it outside!

PAF3O2/PAF4O2 – Healthy Living and Personal And Fitness Activities, Grade 11 or 12, Open Semestered 0.5 CREDIT Teens in Canada are less active than they have ever been and the effects contribute to us feeling stressed, out of shape and tired. We know how amazing a life that includes physical activity can be. The effects are astounding and every teen should have the opportunity to take part in an activity that they feel good about. This course is fitness- focused, using the Fitness Centre, the pool and games that will help students develop and improve their fitness levels. Heart rate monitors and training will provide immediate feedback to individual students’ personal fitness programs and a wide variety of fitness methods will be used to maintain interest and excitement in the course. Health units allow students to connect their experiences to making good choices about healthy eating, mental well-being and sexual health. Fitness can be fun! Take this course to commit to a healthier you. PAI3O2/PAI4O2 – Healthy Living and Individual and Small-Group Activities, Grade 11 or 12, Open Semestered 0.5 CREDIT If you are someone who loves to play racquet sports, friendly competition and fun, this course is for you! This is a focus course that allows you to participate in “social” sports. It covers tennis, badminton, table tennis, squash and pickle ball. A high level of skill in these sports is not required to take the course; it is a way for you to learn how to play for lifelong enjoyment. Basic concepts (such as serves, forehand and backhand shots) transfer from one sport to the next. So do strategies between the sports. Students will travel to the Cricket Club for squash and compete against each other in friendly competition during the various sports. Health units allow students to connect their experiences to making good choices about healthy eating, mental well-being and sexual health. If you are someone who loves to play racquet sports, friendly competition and fun, this course is for you!
