Going on the Grade 7 camp retreat as a new student was a defining moment for Ellie: “I only knew three people at Havergal, so I was really nervous and felt outside of my comfort zone, but the experience helped me push myself to make new friends at a time when it was most important,” she recalls, adding that the people who she connected with then are still some of her closest friends to this day. While Ellie focused primarily on the sciences in high school, she also discovered interests in Canadian and international law as well as sociology, anthropology and psychology. “These social sciences subjects were outside of my typical interests, but they were really helpful in developing skills in research and writing, which are applicable in any career,” she says. In Grades 11 and 12, Ellie volunteered her time at Holland-Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, supporting kids with traumatic brain injuries. She is currently studying Canadian Medicine in a joint program with the University of St Andrews and the University of Edinburgh’s Medical School. Her advice for new students starting at HC? “Get involved in anything you’re interested in and just try to live in the moment.”

Carina discovered so many things about herself during her 10 years at Havergal. As a new student in Grade 3, she joined the Chess Club on a whim, not knowing that she was unlocking an enthusiasm that would lead her to represent Canada internationally. Notably, Carina won U16 Canadian Women’s Nationals (2021) and placed 2nd overall at Canadian Women’s Nationals for all ages (2023), which qualified her for the Canadian team. When Carina joined the Rowing Team in Grade 10, she reluctantly accepted the role of coxswain, questioning if she had the confidence to succeed. “During my first race, everyone felt so connected. I’ve loved it ever since,” she says. As a statistically-minded person, she enjoys studying the data of each race, comparing the boat’s GPS and her voice recordings to uncover what motivates her teammates most. Carina continues to row at Brown University, where she is studying Economics and Statistics. She is the co-founder of a non profit organization that works to help improve the financial literacy of students and she co-authored a book on the topic. What’s the secret to her success? “Taking that first step of putting myself out there and trying something new is the thing that helped me the most.”

Bona joined Havergal in Grade 9 with an interest in learning more about herself through experimentation. “I really value exploration and spontaneity; I want to try everything,” she says. A pianist and cellist, she got involved in the arts at Havergal by being the Head of Orchestra, supporting a student-run art show, acting in the play and organizing an inter-school music festival. Outside of school, she runs an art zine focused on photography and produces short films (including having one of her films showcased at the 2023 F-O-R-M film festival in Vancouver). Bona also has a passion for health sciences and history, which led her to work with professors from Harvard University and Hamilton College on populating a database on apothecaries’ inventories and related sources on the history of pharmaceuticals. “There is so much that we can learn from our ancestors and the past,” she says of the experience. Bona is currently studying Health Sciences at McMaster University and is excited about the growth opportunities through the program’s interdisciplinary format. A scientist, historian and artist, Bona continues to immerse herself in different experiences, including joining the 2024 Artistic Committee of F-O-R-M Vancouver.

Syracuse University ELEMENTARY INCLUSIVE EDUCATION WITH A MINOR IN PUBLIC POLICY Maia Simmons

Scarlett Nowakowski Queen’s University COMMERCE

Nicole Ho Yat Tang

Wilfrid Laurier University and University of Waterloo DOUBLE DEGREE PROGRAM IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION AND COMPUTER SCIENCE Nicole’s three years of living and learning in Boarding was a formative experience for her. During her time at Havergal, she developed resilience being far away from her home in Hong Kong and uncovered an interest in studying computer studies, something she didn’t connect with at her previous school. “I never thought I would say that computer science is my favourite subject, but I really liked how my teachers taught it at HC.” Building on what she studied in high school, Nicole is currently pursuing a double degree at the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University in Business Administration and Computer Science. A highlight of her time at Havergal were all of the bonding experiences, which included hanging out in the evenings and on weekends with fellow Boarding students, leading discussions as Head of the Asian Student Alliance group and cheering on the Curling Team as skip. In Grades 11 and 12, she was elected to join the Boarding Council, planning fun and engaging activities for the Boarding community alongside a group of student leaders. “In Boarding, it doesn’t matter what grade you are in because you’re friends with everyone, which is fun! The friendships I’ve made there will last a lifetime.”

Touring Havergal in Grade 4, Scarlett and her family felt that Havergal checked all of their boxes: a strong academic program; diverse co-curricular opportunities; ample indoor and outdoor athletic spaces; and a warm community environment. As Captain of Havergal’s Hockey Team in her senior year, she made it a priority to mentor the younger players because of the mentorship she received when she first joined. In her senior year, Scarlett received the Senior Athlete of the Year award for her contributions to the hockey, Ultimate and soccer teams at Havergal. Outside of school, she also played high level competitive soccer until Grade 9 and hockey with the Mississauga Juniors throughout high school. When she wasn’t involved in athletics at Havergal, Scarlett enjoyed studying accounting, economics, math and world issues. “World Issues was a new area of study for me and it opened me up to so many new perspectives when analyzing problems,” she explains. This year, Scarlett is studying Commerce and playing hockey on an athletic scholarship at Queen’s University. Her advice for new students joining the community? “Beyond your classes, there are so many things to do and people to meet at Havergal. Let yourself be curious, explore something new and you’ll see what opens up for you.”

Havergal has been a transformational experience for Maia, who has developed a strong sense of self since joining the school in Junior Kindergarten. “I’ve learned that if you don’t define what success looks like for yourself, you’ll never achieve it,” she explains. Maia discovered her leadership abilities as a House Leader in Grade 6, which helped to foster her love of House and later led her to be elected as a House Captain in Grade 12. Over the years, she was also the Captain of the Rowing Team, the Club Head for the Ocean Awareness Club and a member of the school choir, Diversity Committee, Truth and Reconciliation Committee and Sustainability Committee. Maia was diagnosed with learning differences as a Junior School student and, throughout the years, worked with learning support specialists who helped her gain confidence in her academic abilities. These experiences inspired her to study Elementary Inclusive Education, with a minor in Public Policy, at Syracuse University, where she is the only Canadian to be the recipient of the distinguished Leadership Scholarship. “My goal is to make a significant difference in people’s lives by helping them realize their capabilities and helping them develop confidence in who they are.”

Our Curriculum Havergal College’s strong liberal arts program exceeds the expectations of the Ontario Ministry of Education. All courses are university-preparatory. A credit is granted by successfully completing a course for which a minimum of 110 hours has been scheduled. Many students elect to write Advanced Placement exams. Upon graduation, students receive the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Educational Philosophy Havergal offers a unique education based on leading instructional methods tailored to the learning needs of our students. Our fluid and adaptive program allows us to select those approaches that best serve our students while reflecting our core values of integrity, inquiry, compassion and courage. A liberal arts foundation fosters an attitude of inquiry and encourages students to be open to new ideas and varied perspectives. Students are prepared for a life of independence and impact. Our educational philosophy is inspired as much by timeless principles as the tools of the modern age. We follow three strategies for an inspiring and connected student experience: • sparking excitement to learn through exploration and self-discovery; • encouraging self-directed learning and resourcefulness in each student; and • focusing on active cross-disciplinary thinking and opportunities for mentorship and networking. Co-curricular Activities Havergal College offers a wide range of co curricular activities to meet the interests of students.
