Michelle joined the Havergal community in Grade 4. By graduation, she had gained the confidence in her skills and abilities to know that she wanted to pursue a career as a surgeon. This interest was elevated after she participated in The Cardiothoracic Surgical Skills Summer Internship program during the summer before Grade 11. At Havergal, she co- founded the Havergal Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) chapter so that other students interested in going into the field of medicine could explore all of the specialties through conversation, debate and competition. A viola player with the Orchestra throughout her years, she took on the role of Head of Orchestra in her graduating year and participated in the Music Connect community partnership as a way to engage with people living with dementia. In Grade 10, she went on a Forum for Change excursion to Tanzania, where she stayed at the Olive Branch for Children, a place for vulnerable youth to heal. After Grade 11, Michelle volunteered during the summer at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. She is currently studying Direct Entry Medicine at the University of Edinburgh.

An athlete throughout her 14 years at Havergal, Ana’s position as Arts Prefect in her graduating year gave her the opportunity to demonstrate her artistic skills to the Havergal community. Ana devoted her energy on the sports fields, participating in one sports team every term since Junior Kindergarten (including hockey, soccer and tennis). However, when she needed to relax, she found solace in the Art room, where she enjoyed slowing down and being present in the moment. “Every stroke of the paintbrush is so comforting for me,” she explains. As an Upper School student, Ana was involved in creative clubs, such as sewing and knitting. She was also a member of Resist, Insist, Persist in support of feminist causes. In her Grade 10 year, she participated in a Spanish class trip to Nicaragua to help with a construction project and practise her Spanish skills. Outside of Havergal, Ana was involved in midget double hockey and soccer. She is currently studying Concurrent Education at Queen’s University (with a major in Psychology), a field of study that her Havergal teachers influenced her to pursue. She hopes to work with troubled youth in her career as an educator.

Since starting at Havergal in Grade 7, Noelle developed from a shy and quiet girl into a self-confident leader in her graduating year. As Prayers Prefect, she took the stage three times a week to deliver announcements, introduce guest speakers or make speeches at assemblies. “I considered my role of leadership to be a service,” she says. “I always tried to help others and it inspires me when I see others helping people.” During her six years at Havergal, Noelle was involved in the Welcome Committee, the Senior and Chamber Choirs, the student newspaper Behind the Ivy (as a photographer) and the Art and Math Clubs. Outside of Havergal, she was a youth group leader and a cantor at her church and she volunteered at Korean Canadian Adoptee Association (KCAA), a resource for adopted Korean children to learn about their cultural background and heritage. Noelle is currently a student at the University of Toronto, studying Engineering Science. “I love engineering because I am interested in math and science and I want to make things that will help others.”
